Plex Media Server 1.43.1 crashes immediately when accessed (Synology DS920+)

Server Version#: 1.43.1.10611
Player Version#: various
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

Hello,

After updating to Plex Media Server 1.43.1.10611 on my Synology DS920+, the server crashes immediately when accessed by any client.

Behavior

  • Server starts normally

  • As soon as any client connects, it crashes

  • Now also occasionally crashes shortly after startup without client interaction

Clients tested

  • Browser

  • Windows app

  • Plexamp

  • iPhone / iPad

All clients trigger the same crash.

What I’ve tried

  • Deleted cache folders:

    • Cache/PhotoTranscoder

    • Cache/Transcode

  • Removed recently added media (including custom poster)

  • Restarted server multiple times

No change.

Relevant log errors that I’ve found

  • PhotoTranscoder Crash

  • Unknown metadata type: folder

  • Unable to find metadata agent provider for identifier 'com.plexapp.agents.none'

System

  • Synology DS920+

  • DSM 7.3.2

  • Plex Media Server 1.43.1.10611

Observation

The issue started after the update. The server was stable before. I did however add a custom cover for a movie (A Norwegian poster for the Disney movie Aristocats ripped from DVD).

I would like to downgrade to the previous version, 1.43.0.10492, that has worked fine, but Synology say I cannot roll back to that version… Is it possible?

Logs attached below.

Any help would be appreciated.

Please provide a full set of server log files.

If needed, manually retrieve them using File Station.

With Plex stopped, right click on the Logs folder, choose “compress to Logs.zip”, download, and post to the thread.

Synology does not permit direct rollbacks. Uninstall the current version. When prompted, choose Uninstall Only. Then install the desired version.

When I stopped troubleshooting last night the server were crashed.

Today I must happily admit that the server do NOT crash!
My server will, every three hours, restart if found to be not running and it did so automatically at 0255. The server also do some automatic cleanup during night like scanning library files, emptying trash and so on.

As mentioned above I did remove one specific movie since when I wanted to add a custom cover to it was the time the server started to crash. This was however also the first time I accessed the server after updating to the latest version.

Now, my issue may have been resolved by itself since the movie was removed by me and the server was able to scan the library without me actually accessing the server?

I would be happy if you are able to confirm this from within the logs.

Thank you very much! I will keep that in mind should it be necessary.

I assume this will not remove any settings or other important data?

@Hoggorm Not sure why you disabled debug logging but without that the logs are useless. Please re-enable and post refresh logs if it happens again.

I have no idea

What is this? Some kind of script? If so, I suggest you disable it.

Things like that can cause problems for Plex. They may think the server is not running, but it is really just busy and not responding. It forces a restart which can cause problems such as database corruption.

Example: When Plex Media Server is performing a scheduled database optimization it is essentially offline and may not respond to requests to list a library , stream media, etc. If the server process is killed, it can cause db corruption since the database was open at the time.

As @dbirch mentions, without debug logs it is almost impossible to tell what is happening.

If you can access the server, then go to Settings → server_name → General + Show Advanced and re-enable debug logs. Debug is the default setting. Leave them enabled. I’ve never seen a reason to disable them. Do not enable verbose logs. That will add too much info to the log files and cause them to wrap too quickly.

Correct. It uninstalls the Plex Media Server application. The Plex data folder and media files are not touched.

Suggested Actions

  1. Disable the auto-restart for Plex.

  2. Re-enable debug level logs.

  3. Run DBRepair for Plex Media Server.
    Use the AUTO option.
If DBRepair finds problems it cannot fix, then try REPLACE to see if there are any viable backups.
If DBRepair does not find any problems, or fixes any it finds, then continue with next step.

  4. Let Plex Media Server run for 48 hours (through two maintenance windows).

  5. If Plex crashes, then a) restart Plex & wait three minutes to fully start, then b) pull & post a new set of server log files.

  6. If Plex does not crash, then re-add the movie and see what happens.

Yes, this is a script that checks if the server is running or not. If it is not running it will try to restart the server.

The script send me an email when it triggers, and this is actually the first time it has triggered “for real”.

Thank you.

Thank you. I already added the movie again last night and the server is still running.
