Plex Media Server Crashes Every night

HI @sa2000. I just had a crash and have attached the Dump Files and Plex Logs. Thank you!

Dump Files.zip (119.4 KB)
Plex Media Server Logs_2023-02-24_14-29-01.zip (3.1 MB)

I encountered another crash and have compressed the dump file and logs.

Hello @sa2000 I too have been having trouble with Plex crashing my system when the scheduled tasks are triggered beginning the install of Plex Server Product Version: 1.31.654 which was installed on 2/20 at around 8 PM. No Windows updates were installed on 2/20. The first crash happened at 1:09 AM on 2/21 when the Plex Scheduled tasks were set to run daily at 1:00 AM. I can replicate the crash every time I trigger the scheduled tasks since the update. Since the update I have also updated my Plex Server from x86 to x64 as was suggested to some previous posters in the thread. The upgrade to x64 has not resolved the crash issues.

Roughly 10 min after the tasks are set to run my system crashes and the PC re-boots. I have attached a set of Plex logs while LogMemoryUse is enabled. Here are the steps I followed to produce the logs.

  1. Set Reg Key to enable LogMemoryUse with value of 1.
  2. Set scheduled tasks to run at 15:00 hours.
  3. Re-booted PC at 14:50.
  4. Signed in, verified Plex server was running. Let PC sit idle.
  5. PC crashed and re-booted at 15:13.
  6. Signed in.
  7. Retrieved Plex logs.

System Setup: Windows 10: Version 22H2 Build 19045.2673
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X
RAM: 16 GB DDR4 4000
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3080 FE

Thank you for your time and consideration in this. Also, is there a way to roll back to the previous version while this issue is ironed out?

Thank You. The crashes on the 24th and 26th Feb were similar to the crashes I looked into for 31 January. I have added this to the open issue with the development team

FWIW, I turned off credit detection as an automatic nightly task and my machine quit crashing nightly.

Thanks @Dr_Tone Just tested and switching ā€œGenerate credits video markersā€ to Never has stopped the crashing. @sa2000

Just about a week later. This seems significantly better. I haven’t noticed any memory issues, missing posters (because of memory issues), and Plex stopped crashing when I do a library scan of my TV library.

Thanks for the logs

The LogMemoryUse registry change does not seem to have any effect
Can you check it was added as REG_DWORD type and with value of 1 and it is below
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server

Note that the registry fields are all case sensitive

FYI there is no evidence in your logs of any memory allocation failures

With regards to the crashes - I do see a lot of crashes of the Plex Media Scanner process whilst performing credit detection and would like you to look for the following dmp files and zip and attach

C:\Users\james\AppData\Local\Temp\ba53290d-353f-480e-9af1-d6568b1df2f6.dmp
C:\Users\james\AppData\Local\Temp\9c6905bc-2284-410b-acbd-19d9a47e641c.dmp
C:\Users\james\AppData\Local\Temp\b345d924-e2dd-455e-a5f1-4eaa34f19c81.dmp
C:\Users\james\AppData\Local\Temp\75593750-cc8c-476d-9c13-01ca63807491.dmp

These are all scanner crashes -
I would not mind getting one of the files that gave one of these crashes
F:\Video\TV\The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019) {imdb-tt0898266}\Season 10\s10e19 - The Collaboration Fluctuation.mkv
Please zip and upload the zip on google drive / dropbox etc and send me link by private message

Please send the zipped dmp files by Private Message

Also - please see if this sub-directory still exists - if it does, please zip and include

C:\Users\james\AppData\Local\Temp\497e9c9c-1663-4904-ac89-c6898fbaca42

There is no evidence of Plex Media Server crash dumps being created - the only ones I see appear to be for credit detection in the Plex Media Scanner process

I would like to capture a crash dump for Plex Media Server, exe - Did the process crash out and no longer show up in windows task manager ?

If you would not mind, to re-enable credit detection and see if making the registry edit outlined in this support article would result in a a dump file being generated by windows and saved in %LocalAppData%\CrashDumps folder

Crash Logs: Plex Media Server | Plex Support

Note this registry is to create an entry of type KEY
So it would be right click on Plex Media Server and select New and then key

So to summarize:

For the scanner crashes that occurred when credit detecting - i would like the dmp files zipped from the paths shown and the media file identified and zip of a temp subdirectory if still exists

For the server crashes - setting a windows registry Key to see if windows creates a dump file when Plex Media Server crashes out

Please create this directory if it does not exist already and reboot after making the registry edit for capturing application crashes

C:\Users\james\AppData\Local\CrashDumps

When the server crashes during scheduled tasks = please look for a windows created dmp file and capture the logs

Do you have any logs for the time of the crashes ?

Any dmp files still in %TEMP% ? They would have a .dmp filename extension

No, sorry. My HD was giving corruption warnings from the nightly hard OS crashes, I needed a quick fix and decided to try disabling the most recent feature added.

Same here!

I didn’t really have time to investigate it until yesterday but my Windows 10 machine had been crashing nightly for the past 16 days.

If anyone from Plex would like my logs and crash dumps, I will be happy to provide them. I’m looking forward to the end credits marker generation working reliably.

Please do. If you have dmp files please zip and send me privately by Private Message through the forum. And I would need the related Plex Media Server Logs with debug logging not disabled.

The dmp files would be either in %LocalAppData%\CrashDumps or %Temp% which is normally %LocalAppData%\Temp

Thanks for enabling memory usage logging and for providing the server logs and crash dumps for 2 crashes

I have looked at both crashes
12 March at 20:33
13 March at 20:46

The one on the 13th March was to do with running out of memory on the system - the other one I need to look further to establish if the same

For the crash caused by there being not enough memory on the system, the one at 20:46 on the 13th, the logs show the server was launched at 20:43 on Mar 12, 2023
The system has 16 Gb of ram
When Plex Media Server was launch - you had usage by PMS process and the system as being
(Memory Usage: 35.0 MB/15168.0 MB)

So 15,168 MB out of 16,035 MB was already in use - leaving only 867 Mb available memory !
The windows system was up for about 12 days

So you do need to look into what was eating up the memory on the system - or if you have windows memory leaks - reboot the machine every 3-7 days - you can see memory usage in Task Manager and selecting the Performance tab and then clicking on Memory

The first memory allocation failure that Plex Media Server got was at

Mar 13, 2023 20:42:56.513 [10308] ERROR - [TranscodeOutputStream] Unable to allocate RingBuffer for transcode

The Plex Media Server process eventually crashed after many failures to allocate threads and get buffered

I will next look at the earlier crash to see if it was due to same reason

Had further look at the earlier crash - the one at 20:33 on 12 March
At the time of the crash there was only 387 Mb available memory on the whole system - as can be seen from this log entry just before the crash

Mar 12, 2023 20:33:11.180 [8212] DEBUG - Request: [202.150.108.91:64053 (WAN)] GET /video/:/transcode/universal/start.mpd?hasMDE=1&path=%2Flibrary%2Fmetadata%2F67244&mediaIndex=0&partIndex=0&protocol=dash&fastSeek=1&directPlay=0&directStream=1&subtitleSize=100&audioBoost=100&location=wan&maxVideoBitrate=2000&addDebugOverlay=0&autoAdjustQuality=0&directStreamAudio=1&mediaBufferSize=102400&session=j0e100maj2tmod1ylucdcw39&subtitles=burn&Accept-Language=en (17 live) #7c435 TLS GZIP Signed-in Token (tristancoursey) (Memory Usage: 824.0 MB/15648.0 MB)

The total system memory is logged at the beginning of logs

Mar 12, 2023 02:46:49.266 [22856] DEBUG - System Memory 15.66GB

So 15, 648 MB in use out of total memory of 16,035 MB gives only 387 Mb free - too little

It would not be worth while spending time looking further at this crash whilst there is this severe memory usage issue

Thanks for the analysis. I’ve reduced some memory usage for my docker instances. Will see if that helps!

I’m still experiencing periodic crashes. Are there any updates as to what may be the cause? Are there any settings that I can experiment with?

Thank you!

I am afraid the dumps did not have any clues as to the cause. Suspected to be memory corruption, What caused it is unknown.

Can have a look at more recent examples from latest beta to see if still the same. Also need to see if there are similar reports from other users.

Current beta is 1.32.1.6954 which you appear to be running.
