Since about 2200 cst my server has been crashing repeatedly. I have restarted the server a and app a couple times with no results. I turned off remote users and it has helped some but it is still mostly unusable.
+1 for this issue. Same version, started around the same time. Server works for 2-3 hours then it crashes again
Been doing it so much, even the crash reports starts timing out due to “Too Many Crashdumps detected / retries disallowed”. Assuming plex must get a lot of these, during these hours.

Seems like an issue with the transcoder? Looking at the latest plex server log in my case, it’s just spamming these messages over and over, until plex finally crashes:

PLEX Media Server PlexMediaServer-1.23.6.4881-e2e58f321-x86 fails to start, I have reinstalled it starts up lasts about 5 min then fails. It does not grab the tuners and fails. Logs included. Plex Media Server Logs_2021-08-02_23-33-03.zip (4.0 MB)
Couldn’t take the crashing anymore, so I’ve downgraded my plex server to an earlier version ( 1.23.4.4805). That seems to have resolved the problem for now, while we wait for a permanent fix.
Steps to downgrade: a) Go to add/remove programs and uninstall plex media server (You won’t loose any data) b) Download older plex media server version from here c) Run the installer for the old version and install it like you normally would
After the plex server is back up and running, ensure everything looks fine. Also ensure to disable automatic upgrades by going to settings → general → server version updates
P.S: A bit surprised that this thread hasn’t gotten more posts from other users. Maybe this only affects a smaller amount of users in specific environments. I have in average 5-6 viewers every day, some of them relies on transcoding, while others do not. Maybe this error doesn’t affect people that do not rely on transcoding.
I didn’t realize this is Windows. I normally don’t monitor this area because a) I don’t have a Windows machine anywhere and b) I am completely Linux in all I do - even at home.
Can you inspect the “Crash Reports” directory to see if it’s a Scanner or Server crash?
which logs are you guys uploading. im crashing 3+ times a day on 1.24.1.4931 and would like to take a gander/post the correct ones… there are a lot of logs in the zip
Thank you, and sorry didn’t know you didn’t work with windows. You’ve helped me out previously with my qnap instance a few times
So when I navigate to AppData>PMS>Crash reports, all the folders are empty. The logs mention trashing the .dmp file so not sure what to do about that. (not in my recycle bin)
It also appears to not be able to upload the file so I disabled that temporarily to see if that does anything (which it probably won’t)
The log said it trashed the file from the media server folder so it leads me to believe the server crashed as opposed to the transcoder. If you can find the right person to help
given this happens repeatedly, what will be of the greatest help will be:
Settings - Server - General - SHOW ADVANCED
Turn OFF Crash Reporting.
SAVE the change
Now, after it crashes, you’ll be able to dive back into the Crash Reports folder, on into PLEX MEDIA SERVER and , if it was the server, you’ll find a .DMP file.
Zip that up and hold onto it.
Start the server
Grab the logs before the data is gone
Attach Crash logs + DMP zip file.
That’ll give the devs all the information they need to look further
Unfortunately the dmp files being created are zero bytes long - so cannot tell what the crashes were.
I have seen this to arise in the past when the Plex Media Server process runs out of memory or threads but there is no indication in the logs of any memory allocation failures
could you see if we can get windows to manage application crash dumps and may be that way we would get valid dmp files created - see the support article on crash reporting which gives a registry edit for doing that. Crash Logs: Plex Media Server | Plex Support
if you manage to get a dmp file this way captured by Windows, then please zip and upload somewhere and send link by private message to me and @ChuckPa - (I only work on Plex on Tuesdays)
and of course the associated logs zip
The logs show there were crashes during running of scheduled tasks on 22 August at 04:01 am and 05:51 am and 06:18 am. Previous crash on 19th August was not during scheduled tasks - was at 14:34 - so not specific to scheduled tasks
update:
Please run on latest available beta
And please get an extract of all the Windows Application Event Logs for Application Exceptions for Plex Media Server.exe
Plex Media Server launched at 22:09 and shutdown 22:29
There is no evidence of any requests on tcp port 32400 reaching the server in this period. Do you have some proxy software running ? Or some 3rd party security product intercepting requests on port 32400 ?
Also this strange error around time of shutdown

Were you uninstalling Plex Media Server whilst it was running?
The next set of logs show
Plex Media Server launched at 22:35 and logs captured 23:33
Requests on 32400 were handled ok
Is this still a problem with the current version ?
Here is the dmp file. Unable to grab event logs. Not sure where to look in event viewer. I looked under WINDOWS LOGS>APPLICATION and didn’t see any for PMS
The crash on Aug 19 might have been during scheduled maintanence as I adjusted the schedule to allow for more sonic analysis to be completed. @sa2000@ChuckPa
Current versions failing after installs
Plex for Windows-1.34.1.2590-74ea7099-x86_64
Plex Media Server for Windows 1.24.1.4931-1a38e63c6
From your responce:
** What do you mean by “then fails” ?
Runs fine for a short time then login works but the going to a tuner to get a TV channel fails
Then evetualy the server becomes unavailable/off line.
** Were you uninstalling Plex Media Server whilst it was running?
No
Had to shut down the box the restart PLEX did not load or got the “127.0.0.1:32400/web refused connection” error.
** Is this still a problem with the current version ?
YES.
I run a GT-AC2900 router with OpenVPN from Surfshark and the PLEX server is set to VPN UDP and fails TCP as well as streight Internet (no VPN).
I can’t get logs from PLEX if it is not running.
Plex is alowd in all 6 modes through the firewall.
There is nothing blocking the com from any system on my local network as I can get to all the shared resources.
PLEX is not set to get to or give access to anyone out site my network except Plex settings.
