Plex Media Server crashing during scheduled maintenance

Same here

New version of PMS make my NUC7i5 hard crashing.
But surprisingly it does not seem to be the case for my NUC8i5

Using Linuxserver docker image on Ubuntu 22.04 LXC image, on Proxmox (with QSV passthrough)

I’d love some folks who are experiencing this problem to try geekbench and see if they also get a hard crash, if yes, this likely means a gpu problem as the root cause and not Plex.

I also have the intel NUC7i7BNH. It looks like it could be a problem for these models.

I had a similar problem when optimizing videos. Enabling /dev/dri in docker fixed the issue. But this is not the solution for this case.

Because it happens (at least to me), when running geekbench it’s not a plex issue. It’s either the CPU or GPU.

I can easily reproduce it, so I think i can rule out overheating or memory at this point. I tried updating the bios and a few other things. No change. I think we can leave this thread open in case one of us solves it… but it would probably be better to post this in a NUC forum.

This is the OpenMediaVault CPU graph. Something PLEX is doing differently.

The peaks are when scheduled maintenance is done.

imatge

Try running geekbench and see if you can reproduce, at least on my machine I think plex is a red herring.

geekbench6 runs to completion without crashing. Results here:

Reenabling Credit Detection in Plex reliably crashes the machine.

Hmm @frederick.grayson what type of server do you have, NUC or … and if NUC which model?

All the server hardware info is in the geekbench link I provided; not a NUC.

Also, I just upgraded to 1.31.1.6733, enabled Credit Detection and it’s now detecting credits, but so far hasn’t crashed. The changelog for this version shows several fixes related to Credit Detection, so maybe it’s fixed? Time will tell.

Same for me. Every afternoon this week around 2:00, my nephew would start watching a movie on Plex and the server would get very loud and make it difficult to work or have video meeting. I WFH and the Plex servers are in my home office. I downgraded to the previous version and issue went away. Good to hear this is due to the credit detection.

Interesting, I will give the new version a try tomorrow. Even if plex is fixed I still have the underlying issue that is not related to plex, which is a topic for a different forum.

Four hours since the upgrade and still detecting credits without crashing.

Still have the crashing issue with 6733 version.

Definitely an issue with the credits scanner as the log starts corrupting when it kicks off the scanning.

No issue running Geekbench 6.

Definitely an issue with credit detection in my case.

I tried turning off credit detection on one library to see if it was an issue having multiple libraries but I am still experiencing a hard crash.

I’ve turned off credit detection on the other library today and should expect no hard crash overnight.

Can also confirm that if I had added anything to the library, credit detection would be performed without fault but the scheduled task would cause a hard crash.

So either -
a) An old episode or two is causing it to hard crash where there is not enough error handling / checking.
b) The scheduled task itself is causing the hard crash.

I have the same issue, NUC11 with Ubuntu 20.04, latest version of Plex server.

Previously it would crash when it performed audio analysis for sonic features during scheduled tasks and it stopped crashing when I disabled that. Then I updated to the latest version of Plex to get credits analysis and now it’s back to crashing during scheduled maintenance.

If I may add?

On NUCs, ( i have a bnh and several hvk’s ), the default BIOS setting is ā€œbalancedā€.

I changed that to ā€˜performance’ / ā€˜cool’ AND i manually set the ā€˜Fan off’ temp down to 40 c.

I let all the other gradients alone so it doesn’t spin like crazy.

They all stay cool and nothing ever crashes but I do feel them pushing a fair amount of heat out the back (which I should)

The latest version 1.31.1.6733 solves the problem for me.
My device is a NUC7i7BNH.
