Plex Media Server Does not Open

Server Version#:1.29.0.6244-819d3678c
Player Version#: Version 4.92.0

I’m having trouble opening the plex media server after I’ve downloaded it several times on Mac. It appears to try and open for a split second then doesn’t open. Any help fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated!

If the Plex Media Server won’t start and doesn’t even get to the stage where it’ll be writing to the server logs, you can attempt the following procedure to see if there’s any error messages on the OS level:

  1. Open Finder and navigate to /Applications
  2. Select Show Content from the context menu of the Plex Media Server.app item
  3. Navigate to Contents/MacOS
  4. Open the Terminal app
  5. Drag the Plex Media Server executable from the Finder window (#3) into the Terminal Window and press Return to execute it

This is no different from running the app, so it won’t succeed – but you should get a more specific error message about what’s causing it to fail starting.

Thank you for that tip, I was able to capture this error from trying to execute that process again, hopefully this can help pinpoint why I cannot launch.

Error: Unable to set up server: sqlite3_statement_backend::prepare: no such table: activities for SQL: update activities set finished_at=started_at where finished_at is null (N4soci10soci_errorE)
logout

Not sure if this is enough, let me know if this helps for the next steps and Thank you again!

If this is a new server, try restarting it after manually deleting the server data directory.

On a Mac that should be ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/

The ~/Library/ folder is hidden by default. You can get there via Finder’s Go To menu

This wasn’t a new server, originally it installed fine and when I went to uninstall and re install do to issues with the server connecting this became a bigger issue.

So I did try looking for that server data directory folder and I was unable to find it on my Mac. That directory takes me to Application Support, shows all the other applications data but it doesn’t show Plex Media Server at all which is odd to me. I’m guessing it’s because it still hasn’t actually installed or exists yet, but I can’t actually open Plex Media Server, it still crashes instantly. So not sure how to get it to reset manually if I can’t get it to install and open?

Whilst holding down the option key, you will find a Hidden Library appear in your Go menu at top of Desktop in the menu bar.

The correct way to uninstall Plex.

Thank you for that walk through. That actually help solve the issue, in erasing fully I was able to re-install correctly and the Plex Media Server opened finally.
