Plex Media Server.exe crashing for the last month

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033
Player Version#: 1.35.1.2632-c6783c78

The server used to be stable for years. Now it isn’t going more than a day or two before crashing. Any hints?

How do I get official support for this crash issue from Plex?

Appears to be running out of memory

Oct 03, 2021 01:17:57.724 [275816] ERROR - Butler: Uncaught exception running subtask RefreshLocalMedia: bad allocation

You appear to have disabled debug logging - please re-enable it. Also could you set the server setting for logging memory usage. This will need a regedit.

See Advanced, Hidden Server Settings | Plex Support
The setting to add is “LogMemoryUse”

LogMemoryUse

Set Plex Media Server to log memory use and the system total used memory in Plex Media Server logs. A server restart is required for the change to take effect. Not recommended for normal usage.

Set it to value 1
It is type “DWRD (32-bit) Value”

With this set and debug logging set, relaunch Plex Media Server and collect the logs after the next crash

I have identified one cause of excessive memory usage, to confirm if it is that, I need a copy of the Plex Media Server database. Please go through Settings / Server / Troubleshooting and select DOWNLOAD DATABASE. Send me the zipped database by private message

You may need to upload to dropbox or google drive etc as it may be too big for the forum - after you do that please send me link by private message

Thank You

I did the logmemory reg key. Turned on debug, and turned off my scheduled nightly reboot. Sending you a link to my database file. Thanks for your assistance.

Crashed again over night. Just had to restart it. Logs attached.

Thanks - I have checked the database and I can see that one movie “Coyote Lake (2019)” in the Movies library has 65,541 extras - 1 trailer and 65,540 scenes “Coyote Lake: Don’t Try To Out Smart Me”

The last addition was made at 27th August 2021 22:08 with the last massive addition of duplicate extras was at 01:17 am on 22nd August - would you by any chance have captured any logs round then ?

Did you make any change to scheduled tasks? It is possible that the cause of the problem has been fixed

To remove these extras - please try the following

  • Ensure debug server logging remains enabled

  • Disable Trailers on the Movies Library and save changes

  • Refresh Metadata for the movie “Coyote Lake (2019)”

  • Wait for all action to complete - it may take a long time to remove 65000 + extras

  • Capture logs and database zip

  • re-enable Trailers on the Movies Library and save changes

  • refresh metadata for the movie “Coyote Lake (2019)” to see how many extras get added

  • capture logs and database zip

Thanks - the crash happened just after dealing with “Coyote Lake” - it has internal ID 9424 in your PMS database and the failure was after refreshing local metadata for scheduled task

So scheduled tasks are still running - may be the cause of the bug was fixed after 27th August

I had a challenge getting the movie metadata to refresh. It seemed it crashed in the middle sometime. I came back in the morning and it was not running anymore. I moved the movie out of the library in hopes that it would just delete, it didn’t. Eventually it finished the metadata update, and then removed the movie from the database, then I moved it back in and let it “discover” it again.

Seems ok now but time will tell. I uploaded the logs from after the metadata cleanup finished and then another set from the readd. Thanks.

Database looks ok now - can you remember dates of upgrades for Plex Media Server ?
Would like to establish why the scheduled tasks stopped adding duplicate extras after 22nd August

I do not. I normally update when I see it, almost daily its checked. Is there something I can provide you that would help you track it down?

Good day. No problem with server since you helped me. Many thanks.
