The issue has to do with the Plex Update Service.
This looks like it could be an old issue.
https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-update-service/741859
Thanks for sending me the server logs from the 15th September
The Update Service should not be relevant to you because you are running Plex Media Service as a Windows Service and you should not be auto updating Plex Media Server when running in that way
When running as a service - updates should be manually done with the service / Plex stopped when doing that and restarted at the end. If doing the updates in a different windows user account from the one the Plex Service is running in, then it would also be necessary to do a registry edit after every update to ensure Plex Media Server does not auto launch on login - see PMS as a service - #4 by sa2000
There may be tools / add-ons for auto updates when running as a service but these would be outside the scope of any support
The logs show a crash on the 15th September which arose after running out of system resources - perhaps the memory usage climbed to 2Gb - we would need to add some extra logging to troubleshoot
Ensure Debug Logging remains enabled
Please add this registry setting for the local user where Plex Service runs in
Stop Plex
Ensure all Plex processes (except for the Update Service) have exited
In RegEdit whilst logged into the windows account that the Plex Service runs under, find
*KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server*
Right Click on Plex Media Server
Select New → DWORD (32-bit) value
and name the entry LogMemoryUse
and set the value to 1
Start Plex (Plex Service Tray app)
Wait for next crash and then capture the logs
On a crash we attempt to upload the crash reports to back end systems - this does not always succeed but we copy the files to the %TEMP% directory
When we run out of memory - the crash reports tend to end up being zero bytes long - and this was probably the case here
The logs show crash reports with these file name prefixes were created

Could you look in the %TEMP% directory for these - not sure if there would be a filename extension - could be no extension or .dmp
If you find them - zip them and send me the zip
If you get a new crash look for similarly named files in the %TEMP% directory and zip and send with the logs zip
Thanks for the response.
I have waited until it crashed again to respond. I did not have those files because I erased everything in that folder in order to have clean logs before you responded.
Here are logs of the latest crash, thanks to your last analysis of my last log I had a clue of what to look for. I noticed that my N drive became completely full due to configuration error. Can you confirm if that is the possible reason.

Thanks for the help.

Crashed whilst I was watching something.
It only last one or two hours and crashes now.Plex Media Server Logs_2021-10-03_03-24-47.zip (3.0 MB)
I have turned off my main Plex server because it is unusable it now crashes as soon as I start watching something.
Thanks for the logs. I have looked into the 3rd October logs and the issue was that we used up too much memory and when we got close to the 2Gb limit (32-bit apps limit in windows) we started to get errors and then did not recover from it
At the time scheduled task for refreshing local metadata was running
You could try to disable this option in server settings and see if the crashes stop
Settings / Server / Scheduled Tasks / Refresh local metadata every three days
Im also having the same issue. I tried disabling the refresh local metadata and im still getting crashes. I have to manually restart the server application to get it going again. I do not have it running as a service.
Thanks for looking into this. Is it right to assume this issue will be noted?
I do have it running as a service, so that tells us that it is not that at least. We should probably chat to see if we have similarities in our configuration in meantime, maybe we can track this issue down.
Found some uploaded crash reports from your system. Your crashes are different from these reported in this thread and appear to be similar to Plex Media Server Crashing without notice - Plex Media Server / Desktops & Laptops - Plex Forum
Could I have debug server logs to go with the crash reports that are being uploaded please
The issue has been referred to the development team. If they are occurring every 3 days - could we see if disabling the server setting for scheduled tasks for refreshing local metadata makes a difference
If you are getting crashes outside the scheduled tasks window then please let me have debug server logs for them and any dmp files saved at the time to the %TEMP% directory
I have disabled the scheduled task. I am going to erase all logs, and restart the whole system, in order to hopefully get a clean reading.
Another customer here with constant shutdowns…consistently crashes within about 1 minute of opening up. The plex media player on a PC which also is a server appears to not see the server.
Is there a list of standard troubleshoots steps available for crash situations?
If I have to uninstall and reinstall, is there a way to do this while keeping my server settings…specifically live tv and dvr settings?
How do you know it shut down? Does it disappear from the Task Manager?(If you are on Windows, Activity Monitor otherwise)
So the media player shuts down, but the media server icon still shows in the system tray (Win10).
I have two servers…one has live tv and DVR, the other has movies and tv shows…the same issue is now on both.
If anyone has some basic troubleshooting recommendations…or suggestion on how to update the version, I would appreciate it.
I currently have version 1.34.1.2590-74ea7099 (player) and 1.24.3.5033 (server)…is this the latest and greatest? I used to constantly have version updates at startup, but I haven’t seen that for some time.
I notice I’m not running the latest versions. If I download the latest versions, and install them, will it simply update my current installation…or will with wipe everything like a fresh install?
Also could my crash issues and failure to get automatic updates be related? It’s odd that the same issue is happening on two separate machines.
For anyone who may be viewing this thread and having a similar issue:
Did this for both my servers and now I’m functioning properly again.
For whatever reason, my previous versions were trash…and also unable to see available updates (I tried “Check for updates” in the general section, and it said I was up to date even though I was not.
Glad it worked out.
Zero crashes ever since disabling the server setting for scheduled tasks. It has been so long since it has been stabled, that I keep assuming it crashed, but it has not. Thanks for your help. Let me know if the development team need any data in order to fix this issue.
