is that possible to share the 1.40.0.8074 again?
Seems HW Tonemapping is working on it and not working on the latest preview build.
@mlbla6 1.40.0.8074 actually never worked, due to a build error in the transcoder the tonemapping function was a no-op. May I ask which device you are using for transcode which gives you errors?
@jibbers42 opencl on windows is on my personal wishlist but is not currently on our roadmap
I see, here’s hoping for opencl on windows to happen…
Have you seen poor ARC transcode quality (or maybe it’s just my machine)? Would the work you’re doing now include poor ARC transcode quality or is it a separate thing?
It is not just your machine. The quality was poor for me as well on my a580. I have switched back to CPU.
@jibbers42 When you say ARC transcode quality
are you referring to how dark the video is when tone-mapping? If so I have started a dialog with Intel about it but any changes will need to be on their end. If not, is the quality poor even without tone-mapping?
No, I’m not referring dark video.
This post, [Plex Media Server] Forum Preview for Tonemapping on Windows with Intel iGPUs - #126 by jibbers42, shows a 1080p SDR transcode, which I think means no tone-mapping.
You can really see the difference if you look full size. I could have gotten a much worse example if I’d spent any time on it looking for a really bad one, but I just jumped to the middle of a vid and grabbed a scene with blockiness in about 5 seconds.
This post, [Plex Media Server] Forum Preview for Tonemapping on Windows with Intel iGPUs - #69 by jibbers42, shows worse blockiness, but it’s a 4K HDR transcode. That makes a difference for darkness, but doesn’t seem to matter for quality much if at all.
If it helps I’m sure I can get a really bad example with 1080p SDR (let me know), but the first link is bad enough to not use it anyway. @m_donze seems to have similar quality issues with his ARC.
The quality is poor even with TM off. @jibbers42 is correct when describing it as blocky. It’s significantly worse with high movement scenes. The darkness I understand is from intel’s side.
Both of these are from 4k HDR to 1080p HD TM transcode. The first one is CPU and the second is GPU. The blocky nature is hard to see in the second one despite the noticeable difference in quality.
Does this occur only on this preview or on the public builds as well?
The poor quality is for both public and preview builds for me.
@jibbers42 and @m_donze. There may or may not be something we can do, its worth investigating. Unfortunately I do not have the bandwidth to so so at the moment so I captured the information you provided in an internal issue (Reference: PM-1390) so we do not loose sight of it.
An information for you.
On my Radeon 7900 XTX, there is no problem with HW transcode 4K HDR to SDR with tone mapping enabled.
I can see the tone mapping option is enabled on the colors of the transcode video.
Very good job
Drivers AMD Adrenalin Edition 24.4.1
You can update your documentation.
Just in case anyone wonders, I have an Alderlake-N UHD Graphics (Xe Compatible N100, 12th Gen), and on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS I have been able to get HDR tonemapping to work, when I disable tonemapping from the menu. Maybe it gives possibilities for the Windows driver? Also, can you fix this, so that I can place HDR tonemapping to ‘on’ instead of to ‘off’ in the plex server dashboard. I mean, it is certainly working in hardware, as software tonemapping is just too much for a N100…
I have updated the download links to point to a new version which updates the build to 1.40.2 and includes a potential fix to those experiencing issues when running RDP. Please also see the note about issues with RPL-P and ADL-N devices.
@tonigreywater or @mordenk can you please let me know if this latest build addresses your issues when using RDP?
I just tried it, and it appears to work fine with the few files I tried. With and without RDP Thank you!
Work fine with rdp, intel i7 11gen. win10
but its too dark
Left SDR | Right HDR tone mapping 4k - > 720p
@chris_decker08 I’m using an N100 cpu so based on your note about the ADL-N regression it sounds like I’ll need to wait.
@mordenk I am not quite sure if it works like that. Plex sometimes waits long before implementing stuff. The best thing you can do with an N100 is install Ubuntu 24.04 desktop and figure out the right drivers through command line.
@mordenk is correct, a fix is coming shortly from intel
