No 4K HDR HW Transcoding on Windows using 10th Gen Intel

Apologies if I’ve missed a topic somewhere this is explained, however, when trying to play 4K HDR/ DoVi H.265 files on another device and I deliberately select a lower resolution or bitrate, there is no hardware transcoding on my i5-10500T, and I cannot fingure out why. I’m fairly sure this generation of Intel CPU’s supports a wider range of codecs/ resolutions etc via IQS. Just to note that 1080p H.265 SDR files to any of Plex’s in-built transcoding presets works fine on hardware.

Is this a software or hardware limitation?

HDR to SDR Tone Mapping

On Windows based systems, Plex does not support hardware accelerated HDR → SDR tonemapping using Intel Quick Sync Graphics.

This might keep Plex from using hardware accelerated transcoding as well.

If possible, upload the entire log file. There is some information after the lines you included that contains additional details. Just drag the log file into the message window. It will insert at the cursor location.

Plex is using hardware accelerated transcoding and HDR to SDR tonemapping.

Here’s two examples from your log files. The first is A Quiet Place II using Firefox. The second is The Jungle Book using an iPhone.

You will see many entries about NVCUDA failing, etc. That is OK. Plex looks for Nvidia drivers & GPUs first, makes log entries when not found, then looks for Intel QSV.

TPU lines show which encoder/decoder is used. Final line confirms using Intel graphics.

Thanks for explaining this. That’s actually very interesting. Not entirely sure what’s happening then as my CPU usage is 100% and GPU usage is 0% during a transcode? Unless I’m missing something somewhere?

I could be misreading something. The docs, which I linked earlier, say tonemapping isn’t supported using Intel GPUs (so my first post is in conflict with my second post). If tonemapping is performed in software then that is what is hitting your CPU. Let me do some checking.

Just a quick update: I turned off the HDR Tonemapping setting in the Transcoder settings and it now seems to use HW transcoding in all circumstances. I’m happy to use that for now as I won’t be using an SDR display.
