Plex Media Server not starting with startup of Win 11

Server Version#: 1.43.0.10492
Player Version#: 1.112.0.359-0d79a49f

Plex Media Server is never starting up with start up of Windows 11, despite being on the list of start up apps both in Task Manager as well as Settings and as ‘enabled’ with the correct file location of the executable.

When are you checking?
Before you are logging in to Windows, or after?

Does Plex server work as expected, after you open it with the normal Start menu of Windows?

I check a long time after I logged into Windows, I sometimes checked like 5 hours after. I have to manually launch the Plex Media Server myself, and then things work as normal.

After starting the server manually, check the “automatic startup” setting in the context menu of the Plex logo in the Windows task tray.
Maybe try and toggle it off and back on

I tried that many times already

Do you have perhaps both the 32bit and the 64bit version of Plex server installed?
You should only use the 64bit version now.

No I don’t, see screenshot of Revo Uninstaller Pro Search Window below:

My advice: never use hat kind of tool with Plex server. It will cause you trouble.

Do you use more than one Windows user account on that machine?

Have you tried to make Plex server startup even without a user logging in? If so, which method did you use?

  1. I don’t

  2. I don’t

  3. I don’t, and I don’t see what good that would do.

What does https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns show under the login tab?

Man, I’m having the same issue and stupid MS copilot keep leading me down rabbit holes chasing nonsense. I have a GMKtec K7 plus running a server and it the Plex server won’t startup with windows. I have to manually start it every time.

It shows the following:

Thats showing that it is set to auto start. So not sure what is going on.

Did you install Plex server on any other drive than C:?

Have you moved the location of the Plex data folder away from the default? If so, what kind of drive is that? Is it encrypted?

I had it installed on another drive at one point (see below screenshot on WizFile), and I had to at one point removed the Microsoft Store version of Plex Media Server and installed the Plex Media Server manually after downloading it from your website. None of my drives are encrypted.

Leave only the one on drive C: in Programs.
Remove all others.
Uninstall Plex server, but don’t use your “uninstaller” or “cleaning” tools of any kind.

Reboot Windows, then install the latest version of Plex server.
You may find one installer in the Plex data folder, in the subfolder Updates.

Would that delete my server database and or media files?

Not if you heed my warning from above.

You should reboot and then check the Event Viewer to see if there is a failure. It is also possible that it is trying to run with old credentials, perhaps a password changed?

Hey, I might have found a work around for your problem. I had the same problem with Plex not auto starting after windows start up forcing me to go in and start the system manually. I was working with MS Copilot, and it actually guided me into creating a scheduled task to start the Plex Media Server exe file 30 seconds after a startup. I tested it several times with success. The only weird thing I noticed is that there is still no icon in the system tray when the Plex server is running. But I was fine with that as long as the server was starting after a reboot. I run a plex server on a mini-PC at another location which had me set up a daily system reboot so as the remote desktop connection token would configure itself correctly. (or at least that’s what Copilot told me?
