Plex Media Server Not Using Local Metadata

I have metadata embedded in all my .m4v files however Plex will not use the embedded artwork when I add a new file to the directory.

Things I’ve tried:

  • Manual refresh of the particular movie not using embedded metadata
  • Refresh of all metadata for all movies
  • Unmatched and Manually matched a movie

None of these things make it use the embedded artwork.

The only way I can get it to use the embedded artwork is to delete my entire library and add it again.

PMS: Version 1.4.2.3400

Do you at lease see the embedded artwork when you select edit movie-> poster?

Nope can’t see it in there

Let me ask… Does Plex correctly match the movie? What poster is it using? Is it a pretty official poster or just a screen shot?

Plex does correctly match the movie and downloads a poster from themoviedb it’s just not pulling the poster from the embedded data

Not sure if this will help but your PMS is a little old. Maybe a newer version may resolve your issue.
Oh yeah Plex v1.5.1 is a mandatory update…

Strange that my PMS is telling me that its upto date.

Ill download the new version manually and see how I go

For tv-shows, if no match is found online, local media assets is ignored no matter what!

So adding tags (titles and cover images), and other assets like posters and backgrounds, for shows and seasons is just wasted work!

Since local assets will ONLY be used AFTER a match is done. It has been this way in every version of PMS for at least a year.

Why the hell would local assets be needed if a match was made with a database, and metatada could be downloaded?

Why are tags ignored until a match is made with a scraper?

Yeah I know what you mean. LMA only works on matched items… I believe the LMA is an afterthought. Was tossed in the Plexverse with little testing because Plex has been since day one, an online matching media server.
Now it’s a destructive, online matching media server.

I guess if you don’t like the picture online then you can change it to one you like. LMA is funny that way… What came first, the chicken or the egg.
Was the reading of embedded titles first or loading .png/jpg first. What makes me so damn mad about LMA is it has no logic, or handicaps the user at the very least.

Sooo, you want to use this side-load picture… Sure, no problem. The picture loads and now the title is Fu#$ed up.

Make sure, that the line ‘Local Media Assets’ has a checkmark on it under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - Personal Media Shows

An ‘unmatched’ show cannot get any metadata (local or not), because it hasn’t been associated to a meta data agent, yet.

Try to ‘match’ your tv show to the ‘Personal Media Shows’ agent.
Use the ‘Match’ menu item, which appears on the main ‘preplay page’ of the show under the ellipsis ( . . . )
top, right
‘Auto-Match’ - ‘Personal Media Shows’

(Match/Fix Match is only available for the whole tv show, not for a single season or episode)

After this went through, you may have to Refresh Metadata again for the show.
