Local Media Assets not prioritized

Server Version#:1.25.8.5663
Player Version#:1.42.1.2926-415b0e14

When adding movies, the local movie poster and fanart is shown second and not selected by default.

The Scanner and Agent are both set to “Plex Movie”, “Use local assets” is checked, and “Local Media Assets (Movies)” is set at top priority under Settings > Agents. All movie posters and fanart are saved per the local media filename instructions below.

The server-wide Agents settings only apply to the legacy agents. The Plex Movie agent (non-legacy) is configured per library in each library’s Advanced tab.

You mention that Use local assets is checked… is it checked in the Advanced tab of that particular library?

I’ll also add that you should NEVER manually select any artwork when editing a movie or tv show. If you do this plex will then see this edit as a locked field which will override the local assets you may have with your media.

Another thing to consider could be embedded images in your media files. Do you have Prefer local metadata enabled ? It might be a factor.

Lastly, could give us an example of your files and how they are named. Here is an example of mine which works perfectly with plex.

plex@dokuro:/data/MediaServer/14b-Movies/Movies/Aliens (1986) {tmdb-679}$ find . -type f
./Aliens (1986).mp4
./poster.jpg
./fanart.jpg
plex@dokuro:/data/MediaServer/14b-Movies/Movies/Aliens (1986) {tmdb-679}$

Unchecking “Prefer local metadata” worked! Thank you!!

I’ve been trying to find a solution to this forever. To answer your other question, yes “Use local assets” is checked in the Advanced tab of all my libraries (not sure where else that option is).

Nice, the Prefer local metadata can be a bit a pain as it will to my knowledge override pretty much everything else and assumes anything embedded in your media is used first.

What’s the best software for editing mp4 metadata? I’ve been using TinyMediaManager, but it actually doesn’t seem to edit the metadata.

I seem to be able to use VLC to edit everything, but only one file at a time. Thanks again!

The question is… do you need to edit or embed any metadata into your files?
If so: I’m using an app named “Subler” on macOS; IIRC, “mp3tag” should do the same job on Windows (despite the name).

I’ve had to rebuild my library a bunch of times because I can never successfully restore from backups on the Shield. The most tedious part is always getting the right posters/collections set up again.

Now that I know Plex looks to the ‘Album’ tag and embedded cover art, I plan to update all my files with the actual posters/collections I want, so the next/every time I need to rebuild again, it will finally default to the ones I want.

Will check out mp3tag, thank you!

I use EasyTag to scrub all my files of all metadata/artwork and then use local assets for all my artwork stored with my media. Takes time to setup but works great.
