Plex Media Server running on Apple Silicon M1 chipset i.e. new Mac mini, MacBook, etc

YES!! driving me bonkers. I can’t find the problem. I started watching the data bandwidth on the dashboard and I get random spikes up to 1 Gig. when that happens I get buffering. Its extremely frustrating. My 10 year old i7 was more reliable until it died.

Any idea what caused that bandwidth spike? I get them up to a gig and when it happens I get buffering on the player. They appear completely random for me. Thanks,

It seems Emby is offering users an M1 download test link. Hopefully Plex will follow soon

Since the macMini will be running PMS, and any required transcoding, nearly any Synology NAS that has 1Gb NIC would be fine.

I’m using an 1812+ with PMS running in VM on another system. The AppleTV has been able to direct stream every x.264 and x.265 file I’ve ever thrown at it.

Just set up my Plex server on a new M1 Mac Mini and Plex seems to be crashing daily at seemingly random times. Perhaps related to media scanning? I think I get it while browsing the library from different clients and/or during nightly maintenance. I migrated my server form an older iMac to the M1 so I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. Anyone else seeing random crashing on 1.23.0.4497?

I haven’t seen any issues at all on my M1 server. But then again I did do a clean install of Plex, just more symbolic of turning this page into a new chapter of my Plex server’s life haha. I came from a 2009 Mac mini so this is a monumental upgrade.

I did see though that a lot of people in the forum here migrated their server data over from a previous one. Maybe their mileage differs but like I said mine has been rock solid.

May I ask what server version you are using? Mine has crashed three times since my post this morning.

I get a similar problem, but my server crashes if I am working on editing a movie or TV show and I am uploading a new movie to the server at the same time.

Version 1.22.2.4282-a97b03fad is what I’m using, but I usually update as soon as an update is available to it. I’m not on any betas or anything.

@bryce.wilson93 & @Ric_Cypher I noticed today that when I launch infuse on any iOS/tvOS/macOS device it crashes my Plex server immediately. I have removed infuse from all my devices to see if I can get some longer uptime to start.

Updated 1.22.3.4523 when it came out. Plex was a new install on my M1 Mini (did not bring in the database from my old mini), no issues. It’s been over 4 months actually and only crashed 4-5 times in that period. Other devices have accessed with Infuse 7 - no crashes to report either.

Yeah I’d assume the crashes may be linked to plugins like that as I don’t have any installed at all. Only Tautuilli. Let us know if disabling Infuse helps!

@bryce.wilson93 & @icythermite Just thought I would report back. Since removing Infuse from all my devices I am happy to report I have had 100% uptime for several days. I am theorizing maybe it had something to do with my server migration and infuse. Although Infuse seemed to be aware of the new PMS location it wasn’t happy about it. To test this further I am going to begin to slowly re-install infuse and monitor Plex for crashing again.

I am still not sure why Emby can offer a beta of a native M1 app while plex is not even offering a glimpse of when they might offer it. Disappointing for sure.

Maybe they’ll surprise us with a fully functional application?

I’m starting to wonder why I keep giving Plex my money when they don’t at least indicate if they’re working on M1 compatibility. Plex should be a much more robust service and stable app. But it’s not. And that’s the problem.

We’re working on M1 compatibility.

Not sure how those two things relate. Spending time getting M1 support theoretically takes away from time we could be fixing bugs on other platforms.

Supporting M1 is something Plex should have worked on for months. I understand there are challenges and Apple really did not make it easy for developers this time. But if Emby can have a beta of their version, I would expect that Plex can at least match them. This development is just regular keep up with the times work and should have nothing to do with bug fixes and stability and certainly not take away from any of it. If anything takes away from bug fixes and stability, it might be the hard push into music from Plex over some time (why music, are streaming services out there not enough and used by almost all users ? )

Thanks for the confirmation. Any idea of the timeframe?

With WWDC next month even more Apple Silicon devices will be out there so support only gets more important as time goes on.

By all means, submit your application to work for Plex to help them complete this project with all the knowledge you bring to the table. Obviously they’ve been working on it, and obviously it’s a huge change in the code and supporting new technologies in these new M series chips. I guarantee they didn’t get caught by surprise when the M1 came out. This has been in development for quite some time now I’d safely guess, and of course they want this to be a success. I’d rather they take their time on it and get it right. This is no easy task.
