I have the same thing, so I ran an app called Memory Clean 3 and found that for some reason that I can not find that every now and then at random intervals the memory gets eaten up and the M1 (16Gig RAM) gets low on memory. As soon as I cleaned the memory it was fine again, no pauses. I usually just sleep the M1 overnight, but think I’ll try either shutting down one night a week and see if that helps. Maybe between us and Plex staff we can figure out what is causing it as I have been run an M1 since it was released and the problem has only started happening over the last couple of months.
I have done some more research and it appears that if intel based apps are not written to run on the new M1 apple that all the RAM gets used up and starts caching to the SSD drive which causes the black screen, spinning wheel. It seems to be a problem for many apps that are not written to run with the M1. Hope Plex comes up with a solution to this problem soon.
One more thing I noticed is that the Plex Server uses more than 4Gig of the 8Gig of RAM just running normally… seems way to high to me. Does anyone have a different type of Mac so we can compare?
Sorry 4Gig+ of 16Gig, not 8Gig
I do understand that Plex is not sharing their roadmap. But what I can not understand that the M1 has been our for so long now, and we have heard nothing. No, we are working on it, no alpha, no beta, this is a bad sign. So Apple will ship the next generation any day now, Plex stays quiet.
What is going on? why is there no update whatsoever? Is plex working on a native M1? is there a planned beta? Is is nice to see improvements to the music portion of plex. but I personally think this is the biggest waste of time of a dev team ever. With streaming services being so cheap now, I don’t see a music app as being very useful. Spend the resources on M1 and get a native app out.
Hi, sorry it’s been a while but my Plex server on the M1 Mac Mini is no better. As of today I’m hooked up via Ethernet to my latest gen Apple TV 4K and literally just a few seconds ago got the error “your network is not fast enough to stream this movie” and Plex crashed. I’m completely baffled by this; Apple TV has no issues with any other streaming service, wifi or Ethernet. Plex worked great on my old Intel-based Mini, even if the server itself was glacially slow to actually use. But this new M1 Mini with the latest version of Plex is just not cutting it.
Btw, I’m a lifetime subscriber, so I have tried to be supportive of the team. Would I pay another $20 into a pool to buy an M1 system for a developer? Yeah, if we’d then get native code.
What router/modem setup are you going through? Guess you would have tried rebooting the modem and mini after the ethernet connection. Can you tell me your Plex Network settings on the server?
I think the issue is with the Mac and nothing to do with Plex. I am saying this because your issue sounds pretty familiar to the issue I was recently having.
My Mac mini M1 would randomly disconnect and display the Mac warning box that the network connections had been disconnected.
Fear not however as I discovered the fix and it is a simple one: Close the plex app and disconnect any network/nas drive connections > Head to Settings > Network >Unlock the settings pane > Click on your LAN connection on the left hand side and click the minus icon bottom left.
You will be promoted are you sure etc - click yes. This now removes any LAN connection from the Mac. Disconnect the LAN cable from the Mac and wait around 10 secs.
Now click the Plus icon in the network settings and select Ethernet from the drop down. IMPORTANT - give the new Ethernet connect a new name to ensure the MAC sees it as a new one and it doesn’t relate it to the old one. Click Ok/Yes and the new connection will appear on the left.
Now reconnect the LAN cable and set up any static IP you had before. I am pretty certain this will solve your issue as it did for me. Mine has been perfect since.
I am guessing its an issue from when the Mac Mini M1 was restored from a backup from an Intel Mac. (thats how I migrated mine to keep the Plex database intact)
Give it a whirl and see how you get on. Update us when you’ve given it ago.
Thanks, I’ll try that too. I still get weird things happening every now and again like a spinning wheel in the middle to watch a tv show or movie, then the program carries on.
Glad you got it sorted.
This changes nothing about the fact that we have been waiting for any news from Plex about a native M1 app. Apple gave developers access to start work a long time before the M1 ever shipped, more than a year+ later and we have nothing from plex. Yes, many improvements to Plex music (again, waste of time in the streaming age) but no native M1 app. Not even an announcement why it takes so long. The Apple dev team provides help to anybody who works on a native app. Most companies came out in weeks with it, others took a few months. If there are specific challenges, let your users know. Maybe some can help, have suggestions, etc.
Thanks, that fixed the problem. I appreciated your advice.
This does change something as it is a solution to a MacOS issue. If you want to complain, speak to Plex. Complaining to us is going to solve nothing. Fed up of seeing the complaints about native M1 support - the app works fine via Rosetta 2. I am sure Plex are working on it, but for now we will have to accept it running on Non-Native mode.
Brill! Glad it fixed it. Very odd issue but glad my tinkering solved it for you too.
Iv been doing it for years on my Mac Pro. It only wakes up when I turn on Plex or anything through network. Sometimes before the movie is over it’s back to sleep.
Can you tell me how you set that up please. I have tried all sorts of combos, but either the Mac doesn’t sleep at all or it won’t wake up when I run Plex. Is it a combo with the modems Wake On LAN?
I have the Mac Automounter app installed, but would you mind letting me know the “mount options” settings for the client/s and server/s please?.
How? they provide no method to contact them.
I attempted by opening a ticket to Sales, asking two simple questions - Does PMS support M1 natively, or do they have plans to support it, and is PMS supported on Monterey.
She said sales did not provide technical support, and directed me to these forums! I informed her I was not seeking technical support and was asking two sales related questions. She referred me to the their OS support page, which is six years out of date for macOS. And then she provided a link to this thread for M1 support (only one mention of it from anyone at Plex, and 6 months ago). She said if I had any other specific issues or posts, she would request support to look at them. I created 2 x new posts. One asking about M1 native support or plans, and the other about macOS Monterey support. Neither thread have been replied to by anyone from Plex. That’s been more than a month ago.
So, there is no way to “speak” to Plex.
And this is why when asked, I suggest people avoid Plex - it is a poorly supported (wannabe) service/product. And I suspect they want to transition to a service provider, and the client is only a means to that. PMS - would not be needed if they transitioned to a service.
Wonder if we will see a native Apple Silicon version before the end of the year?
I get it, when companies start to grow bigger, sometimes they forget who got them there and start ignoring their customers (paid or otherwise). I am sure the there are many Plex employees that still care about us but may be constrained by the company who wants to go in a different direction. We all have to do what is best for us and I hope you find what you are looking for. I think Plex is trying to provide a good service, but they also have many different devices and operating systems to content with. With some Apple customers now saying it is time to stop supporting Intel apps, I guess we will just have to wait and see. I am running an M1 with Monterey and Big Sur and without Rosetta 2, run a Plex server. I am sorry that you are having so much trouble and hope that you find a solution to make you happy. Good luck.
Here’s how a company who cares about customer support communicates with their customers:
All Rogue Amoeba Apps Now Have Official Support for the New M1 Macs
And they have seven apps to maintain/update.
Here’s their announcement about macOS Monterey support:
