Are you starting from scratch or have you tried copying configuration files from your previous instance of Plex to the new Mini? Perhaps remove all the files about Plex from your ~/Library in preferences and Application Support and start a fresh installation… Also make sure that Rosetta has started perhaps first… run some other intel app to make sure that Rosetta is running. If its not, there are ways to reportedly make sure it’s available to run. On mine it loaded when I ran an intel app I installed other than Plex… Hope this helps.
I ended up skipping migration assistant, and started fresh (as the mini was always just a plex server) - and downloaded Plex - followed the guide on moving the PMS, launched Plex which prompted to install Rosetta. Seconds later Plex was operational and running as expected. Relatively painless to be honest - and thank you for your post, I read it just in time!
I have read all your reviews of the PMS on the M1 MacMini and it seems impressive. Does any of you had the chance to test Transcoding with Subtitle Burn in? I picked uf a NvidiaShield some time ago which serves as a plex server and I am quite happy with it (power usage being the main advantage).
It also handles about 2 4K Transcodes in Hardware as long as no subtitle burning (PGS subtitles) is required.
To get around this limitation I am considering the MacMini. Since I live in Switzerland which has terrible consumer laws (no return/full refund policy) I am a bit hesitant to just pick one up and try it out. Could someone possible provide more insight into this?
Many thanks in advance.
Anyone have a comparison between the MacMini M1 and NUC10 i7 ? Which hardware is the best for 4K HDR --> 1080p SDR transcoding? I think that the M1 can hadle only one 4K HDR --> 1080p SDR (HDR–>SDR is the problem i think), the NUC10?
Tried playing back a movie with PGS subtitles - no issues. 1080p.
My 4k Apple TV has been direct playing 4k HEVC HDR Blu-ray Remuxes no problem for last 12 months.
Has anyone had issues with Plex Server crashing on Mac Mini M1 in the last couple of days???
it’s hard for me to tell whats up, i just put everything on a new Toshiba USB-C 4TB external and hooked it up to the Mac, pretty sure it worked fine for a few days. but now plex crashes every 20 mins or so. could it be because my mac goes to sleep? but it shouldn’t right? its sex to keep disks going when asleep.
How did the mac mini work for you? Thinking about adding one to my server collection and moving my plex server over to it.
I need an ‘untouched’ iOS away from my wife and kids to properly manage all of their overly expensive ‘toys’.
My next move on my plex server; I wanted to try turning on the feature to remove commercials from my recorded TV shows and hoping it has enough CPU to properly function.
I have been using a Mac Mini as my PLEX server for 6 years and I am currently using a Mac Mini (2018) I took the leap yesterday and got a Mac Mini M1 (8gig ram) to test it (purchased on Amazon so I have 30 days to test it !) I stated the migration assistant using a time machine back up but for some reason it was taking forever so I updated the M1 to Bigsir 11.2 and then used the migration assistant over a local network and it transferred in less than 40mins. I have over 30 tera of media so I did not want to do a new db install. To my surprise and relief everything worked perfectly when I started up the PLEX server and it purrs like a Apple fan boy’s wet dream lol
The only thing I have not done is update the PLEX server app to the latest build, for some reason the latest build on my Mac Mini (2018) keeps stopping for no apparent reason.
Maybe take a look at this: Xiaomi mi box s crashing the plex media server
My PMS crashed when opening the Plex App on a Xiaomi Mi Box S and I managed to find a workaround, hope it helps.
*Note: My workaround works on a 2016 MacBook Pro 13’. I can’t guarantee you have the same issue and the same solution will work on the M1 Mac Mini, but I see no reason why it shouldn’t.
In any case, this solution has literally given me peace of mind, since I know that if PMS crashes for whatever reason it will come back by itself and I won’t have to bother.
On another note, I’ve been lurking here hoping to find a reason to buy the M1 Mac Mini since spending 879€ is something I have to think thoroughly. Reading this thread has made me want to buy it even more, but I have second thoughts on the 8gb of ram and whether they are going to be enough for the next 4-5 years (since upgrading to 16gb increases the cost to 1138€) and I think I’m going to wait until March in case Apple announces M1X/M2. Holding myself to not press “Order” on this machine is so tough, ugh.
I upgraded from a late 2009 iMac 21.5" so I see huge improvements with the Mac Mini M1. Really happy with the machine. I set a goal to buy it with only money obtained from selling things around the house. (Been learning about minimalism) Collectibles and such. I did it! Sold $900 worth of stuff. I got the M1, a new cheap monitor, and a 4TB external.
I actually fixed my issue here. My son loaded Plex on the Nvidia Shield while I was on the computer, so I saw it crash in real time. Then had him try again, same result. I completely removed Plex from my Shield TV Pro (2019) and reinstalled, and as of right now I have had no more crashes. Looks like the issue was the Plex player and not the server or new HDD. I haven’t had a Windows PC in almost 8 years. I’ll probably never go back. I really like the OS best, just wish everyone would play nicer together. Some integration needs to be tackled to be 100% satisfied.
I don’t have a NUC. On the base M1 mini, I get one 4K HDR → 1080p SDR for a straight rip from a UHD disc easily. I can almost get 2 with no buffering. I suspect a lower bitrate file would do the trick. This is my first Mac and I’m loving it.
Any news on a native or universal build for M1 Macs - all gone a bit quiet on the subject?
Would be also interested to know what sort of timeline there is for universal/native build. Plex media server is one of the last rosetta emulated apps on my system while most have gone native already…
Agreed. I’m actually holding off, keeping Plex on my old server hardware until they release a Universal Build. I’d prefer to have a clean instal with all of the server’s dependencies having full native support as well.
same here, but as you saw with plex arcade, im sure there are things in the pipeline like sending faxes through plex, Betamax addon for plex live TV ($4.99 extra a month), coffee machine integration, HD DVD support and Dominos Pizza Tracker integration.
but yea, we know, plex has multiple teams doing different things…but they dont start working on different things until @elan is finally satisfied with the volume knob on plex amp, since thats the ONLY product from this company that gets ALL the attention.
you’re adorable.
thanks! and obviously correct.
@elan since we have you here, perhaps you’d be so kind as to ignore the snarky and hyperbolic post above, and give any insight you may have on possibility and\or feasibility of a Plex Server build for Apple Silicon. I realize that the Mac mini (and Mac’s in general) must make up a minority of server devices for Plex, but my understanding of their SoC leads me to believe it could have some unique advantages\efficiencies in running a media server.
we love the M1. we’ve made progress on it, definitely a goal we’re working towards.
