Hello, forum users! It’s time again for an update to Plex’s transcoding and analysis backend. This is a special forums-only preview release; the changes in this build will be included in an upcoming regular release once any new issues are handled.
Please test this version with a variety of different media file formats and clients. If you notice any new issues, please respond to this discussion instead of starting a new one, and include your Plex Media Server logs and a sample file that reproduces the issue.
Note that regular releases’ version numbers may share the same first 3 components as this release. The fourth component (the build number) will differ.
If you’re running Windows, you should always uninstall preview releases before installing another preview release or an official release. This won’t affect your library or personal data at all, and it will work around some Windows installer-related issues.
NEW:
(Transcoder) Update to latest upstream ffmpeg
(Analysis) Identify certain Live and DVR-recorded streams that failed to play back on iOS and tvOS devices (#5308)
FIXES:
(Transcoder) Hardware video decoding sometimes wasn’t reported, even when it was being used (#7670)
(Transcoder) The server could erroneously attempt to mux DVB teletext into Matroska (#8213)
(Transcoder) Transcodes to AC3 in MP4 played with incorrect channel mapping on Apple devices (#8306)
(Transcoder) Transcodes to EAC3 in MP4 for Apple devices did not play audio (#8312)
I cannot play any recording in my DVR. It says transcoder crashed. I have tried three different shows. Right now I am recording a new show so when it shows up I will test again. Everything else so far seems to be operating normally. When I download a movie and it is getting the information about it I noticed that it is no faster than it was before.
It appears that the above problem I discussed has a Nother wrinkle to it. It seems if I am using a device other than the server computer the recording will play. On the server computer it is only a black screen with a continual buffer.

dvd sourced tv-show; I forced transcoding in the Plex for Android TV client by telling it to playback @ 320kb/s – after few seconds playing w/ active HW transcode, this crashes my client. It appears the forum doesn’t like my sample, hence only the MediaInfo extract.
edit: sample zipped and added. thanks for the hint, @sa2000

Any file type you cannot attach can be zipped and the zip file attached
If the zipped file is too large to attach, please upload to Dropbox or similar service and share a link here
Tone mapping for HEVC content is not yet implemented. This is not a regression in the transcoder preview.
OK. Noted. I typically do not require transcoding because of the SHIELD TV and was not aware of this. So, at the moment, it’s looking good so far on my server. Nice work
with the last PMS i couldn’t play any mkv with dts ( PMS for synology 716+II) on Plex AFTV Client anymore.
after minutes of waiting it still stands on buffering and does not start to play. the cpu load is always on 92% and higher. that does not happen with earlier versions the lg webos plex client makes it but has problems with the aspect ratio. the windows client plays it correctly.
try to manually install the old version in the DSM package manager; this should work without uninstalling the server first (but even if you have to, the Plex server data won’t be deleted).
Even though it’s not transcoding, it does seem a lot snappier to start playback through the web UI (Chrome). I just upgraded from the latest official version and I think the time to playback is reduced by at least 50%. I’ll see how it behaves on Chromecast and the iOS app later tonight.
