Plex Media Server - Transcoder Preview: 1.12.2.4896

@silence21 I have the same unit as you but have buffering on mpeg2 (same as before this release). Curious, did you do the 64 bit install? Did you restart DSM before or after installing or anything special?

@jpirotte I was testing from work, and I have fairly low upload speed, so I was only set to 720p, and it was working with Safari and Chrome. Last night I tested with my Roku 3, and that worked fine as well. This morning I tried on my Apple TV and I’m getting buffering the same as I was before release.

This is very unstable, Film regularly is stopped due to Error - “Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost.”

Server Logs shows Error -

PLEX media Server logs are attached

Since @silence21 got MPEG2 working in some cases, I decided to test again. I tested with more shows and found consistent results. Shows recorded in 720p always seems to work very well but 1080i files always buffers.

Logs attached. Last show played in logs is 1080i, second to last was 720p. Took a peek at the them and unless I’m mistaken it looks like 720p transcodes at 2x speed and 1080i at about 0.5x.

Sorry I didn’t include a sample file. I can’t seem to create one that’s small enough to upload but also long enough to require rebuffering. However this is happening on all MPEG2VIDEO recordings in 1080i. If you do still need one please let me know.

My situation is basically identical to yours, @jpirotte . After more testing, 720p works great (sometimes as fast as 2.8 transcoder speed), but 1080p is slow, getting to 0.9 at most, and still causing buffering. As this is a beta release, hopefully that will improve! We are oh so close!

I add myself to whom have problem.
I tried almost everything deleting ALL the stuff from pms but nothing…
My config:
-asrock j4105
-2x4gb ddr 2400
-64gb ssd sata2
Video file big buck bunny 4k h264 mp4 60fps

The server show hw decode & encode. Cpu utilization too high (70%) and gpu very low (30%). Every now and then: buffer… & "the server is too slow… Bla bla bla…

Help I need a good release to decide if RMA the gemini motherboard or not… But I can’t see why, there are several reports of j3455 running plus 4k transcoding… The j4105 is way more powerful (2800passmark & gpu decoding encodibg up to 4k 10b hdr)…

60 fps 4K might be the dealbreaker here… have you tried 30fps?

Umh, good observation, I will try but just to know, the playback with MPC-HC is flawless:
15% cpu usage & barely 50% Gpu usage and Perfect reproduction.
I took that as example to minimize variability but I then tested also the Jelly Fish 120 MBPS HEVC & many other 4K sample Samsung LG sony… but also simple 1080P HEVC and I always have problems. [low GPU usage & hi CPU usage]
And I think it is related to hw accel because my previous server (wich I no more own) was a i7 2600K wich was able (but 100% on 8 th) to transcode on the fly all 4K i trew in it but with brute force & high power consumption wich I try to avoid.
This thing is pissing me off, I just don’t want to spent more than 500€ on a Synology 918+ because I already own a DS414 and setting up a very low power server for only 1 hw transcode a time is all I really need, and I don’t want at all to use my next main pc, also if tech is running a desktop is going to eat power when Idle and in Italy energy Cost!!! 0,25 €/Kwh, my J4105 sits @ 7W idle… my old desktop was 34-35W [saving around 50-60€/Year and the possibility to steore the server in very limited space without overheating problems] and I think that also the new ones struggle to go under 30W… maybe best in class are raven ridge wich I read are around 25W but then I should consider the overall performance of the platform wich is a bit disappointing to me!

Updated OP links to point to a new build with a variety of fixes. In addition to the new changes mentioned in the updated release notes, issues resolved from the previous build include failures to transcode to or from Dolby codecs, hardware transcoding failures on some platforms, and some HEVC-related issues on iOS and tvOS.

@rcombs great! Thanks! What version of ffmpeg is this build running? What version is the production version of Plex using?

  1. Issue with 4k MKV content on the ATV 4k. The error is the transcoder failed to start or crashed.
  2. Issue with audio mapping of 68062.xml

Server version 1.12.1
tvOS : 1.25

Server logs, ATV logs and XML attached.

70316.xml - fails sample file below

67649.xml - fails same as 70316

68062.xml - works but the center audio channel is mapped to the right. I mentioned this issue in another post. https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/307172/bug-plex-server-1-11-1-4760-4k-5-1-dts-audio-to-ac3-wrong-audio-channel

I can confirm the above things are fixed! Thanks!

The only thing that is still an issue is subsitles are out of sync when playing back an HEVC content on the Apple TV. Not sure if that is a transcoder issue or not.

Edit: one thing to note is i had to re-analyze my files for videos that did not work in the previous release.

The version from this thread is available here: http://downloads.plex.tv/ffmpeg-source/ffmpeg-2018-03-22.tar.gz
The version used in shipping versions is linked in the LICENSE file in a shipping PMS install.

Cool, thanks! =)

All HW transcoding issues resolved for me in the latest version.

Tested, having same buffering issue as before on 1080i MPEG2, but not surprised since it wasn’t listed in the changelog. Everything else I tested works well!

@jpirotte Did you have issues with previous version service stopping? I noticed that when I tried to connect from a Roku or Apple TV, the service on my Synology would stop. Once I restarted on my NAS, it would connect ok. I stopped testing because of this, I was missing recordings. Sorry I didn’t think to grab logs first! Did you have this issue?

@silence21 no I havent had that issue sorry. That’s a weird one but I’m sure logs might help Plex figure that out

@jpirotte OK, just curious. I’ve updated to this new release, and if I run into it again, I’ll grab logs. I’ll test some 1080i sources when I get home also and see how it goes.

WOW! I just installed the new preview .4969 on my AMD (last gen) A10 APU with RX460 video card and Wow! finally I can play every video/movie I have tried so far on my Vizio QHD TV – none of these videos I tried would play more than 20 or 40 seconds. Now they are playing for 10, 20 and 40 minutes – only stopping because I am stopping them.
Wow, this makes me so darn happy!
Finally, I can have a “movie night” with my friends without having to playback my movies stored with Plex on my ancient Xbox 360 or play the videos via Media Center Extender.

I will try this new release, up to now I resolved my problem switching to Docker under Unraid and everything worked as espected, I can now transcode every single file I own, also 4k HDR 10bit with barely 10% Cpu usage!
