Plex Media Server will not launch on new computer

… is it an M1 mac?

iMac 24

This is a digression from the “won’t launch” issue, but now I’m curious.

There have been 24" iMacs for a while, including Intel variants.

Apple Menu → About This Mac

It will say the version of macOS, and then the computer model and processor.

iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021)

Monterey 12.3

I checked the compatibility with my audio interface before purchasing but didn’t consider Plex.

Thanks

Plex really should be working! I’m confused now too.

Did you migrate data from a previous computer?

I didn’t. Media exists on an external drive.

I still have a paid account that I can log-in to.

Apparently the installer on Plex Media Server doesn’t work with 0S 12.

What if I install on an external drive on another computer and move server files to the new computer?

Nope. I just installed a test server on my Mac (macOS 12.3).

  1. Downloaded from plex.tv

  2. Unarchived/unzipped the download

  3. Moved the app file to /Applications/

  4. Executed the app

  5. macOS gives me a warning (lit. translation from German language macOS)

“Plex Media Server” is an app downloaded from the internet. Do you want to open it?
Safari has downloaded this file today at 8:05pm from www.plex.tv. Apple has checked it for malware but found nothing.

    • Open
    • Show website
    • Cancel
  6. Click Open

  7. Wait a moment for the server to startup, then open http://127.0.0.1:32400/web in Safari (or click Open Plex... in the context menu of the Plex Media Server icon in your menu bar.

That’s due to cause more trouble.

  1. Click open.

Nothing. Plex Server does not show up in Activity Monitor or menu bar.

I notice today’s download is 1.25.9. Yesterday was 1.25.8.

Did you perform your successful launch on M1 mac?

Mine is on an Intel iMac; we installed a server on a friend’s M1 over the weekend.

Was M1 running 12.3?

yes it is.

Imagine my frustration.

And I thought my biggest problem would be migrating my Logic plug-ins…

Success. After a total of 3.5 hrs with 4 Apple Senior Advisors over 3 days.

Thanks for your help.

Can you share what the solution was?

Updating to 12.3.1 - no dice.
Reinstall OS - no dice.
Create a test user acct
Plex server installed on test acct but wouldn’t install in Admin.
Enabled file sharing
Tossed library files
Installed on admin acct just like it’s supposed to.

It would be so much easier if Apple would allow you install previous OS. Normally I don’t upgrade OS until it’s been around for a year.

That’s wild. Glad you got it working. It doesn’t seem like any of those steps really make sense individually.
