Plex Media Server for Mac

Server Version#: Latest
Player Version#: Does not matter

I have plex media server on my mac, plex players started reporting errors like unable to search libraries and random stuff on checking the plex console I saw a lot of errors related to database being corrupt.

I tried to follow the repair corrupt database instructions on plex support site and things didn’t get any better.

So I binned Plex and all my Library to reinstall it but no matter what I try I cannot get plex to install on my mac. I have downloaded the latest version after downloading I double click and I get a stupid popup about copying to applications I click copy and it does nothing.

I copy the file manually to application and double click and nothing no error just won’t start. Can someone help me get plex installed again.

Thanks

On what version of macOS are you experiencing this?
Is this an Intel or M1 Mac?
Are you seeing the Plex icon in the Mac’s menu bar after double-clicking it?

Hi,
It’s MacOS Big Sur version 11.2.2
Intel processor
and no, I don’t see any Plex icon on the mac’s menu bar after double clicking it.
when I double click plex media server from application a little icon quickly appears in the top right hand near the time but within a second it’s gone again.

Totally lost on how I am supposed to get this working again.

I am the same person appears I may have 2 plex accounts

Let’s go for a 2-step approach:

  1. Check if your server is writing any log files as it starts up. As you cannot look those server logs up through the Plex app itself, you’ll need to check them out in Finder. The files should be located in ~/Library/Logs/Plex Media Server/ – we’ll be looking for the file called Plex Media Server.log in particular.

  2. If there’s no logs, try running the PMS app from Terminal. This will still fail but is likely to give more hints on what’s wrong

    1. Right click the Plex Media Server.app in your /Applications/ folder and click Show Package
    2. Inside the package, navigate to Contents/MacOS
    3. Open the Terminal app
    4. Drag the executable Plex Media Server from #2 into the terminal window
    5. Confirm by pressing return

Thanks, No logs so followed #2

here is my error

Error: Unable to set up server: sqlite3_statement_backend::prepare: no such table: schema_migrations for SQL: select version from schema_migrations order by version (N4soci10soci_errorE)

Does this issue persist if you do a full uninstall, removing the app and ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/? When reinstalling the app, make sure to drag it right into /Applications/ folder before running it.

From your OP I suppose you already tried this… would you mind giving it another try?

Hi Thanks for your help.

I don’t have a Plex Media Server folder. So i have removed the app, downloaded it again. Moved it from downloads to Applications and double click.

it prompts about being downloaded and I click open. Then nothing happens.

I ran it using terminal and I have exactly the same error.

Just double-checking… you didn’t find any server data directory in your user’s library folder?

The OS will resolve ~ to /Users/<your user name>/. Just trying to rule out you accidentally looked for the folder in the system library folder (/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/)

Thank you for your help!

Yes I was looking in the wrong library area. Once I deleted the plex folder the downloaded new version worked.

What do people do to prevent this from happing as now I need rebuild the libraries to go through 1000’s of them and mark all the ones I have watch (if i can remember).

Well… you already went with the nuclear option – which can be necessary if the database is gone for good (corrupted beyond repair).

You’ll find a number of extensive threads about how users handle their backups w/ different backup strategies for media and their server’s data directory and/or database.

LOL yes I did go with the nuclear option because plex has all my media and I don’t want to spend my evenings fixing a media server I want to spend my evenings watching my media

I’ll have a look for db backup solutions. Would be great if plex allowed users to configure their own DB like mysql.

Thanks again for your help.
