Plex Movie Agent isn't finding local extras

I never have been able to hold two (or more) versions in the same folder with the extras - and expect normal behavior. Eventually I always have the extras go missing.

Since I started putting ONLY ONE Version in the folder with the extras, everything is fine and Plex shows the extras when viewing ALL Versions.

Do put the movie and the folder with the extras on first - then follow up with the other
versions. <—that’s what I do and so far, so good:

Were it not for those unwanted REVIEWS - THAT ARE ABOVE THE EXTRAS! - AGAIN! - you could see both versions formerly marked with a Blue 2, or Split - show the same extras:

That is normal behaviour, at least for the Plex Movie agent. We’ll only look for local extras if there is one media file in the folder (or the same media split up into parts, e.g. -pt1, -pt2)

To clarify, was this expected behavior with the Legacy agent, or only with the new agent? I had no problem with the Legacy agent, but perhaps I was just lucky? Just looking to confirm, not trying to argue here. Appreciate the help very much.

If I need to change my folder structure or agent again, I can do that.

I’m not entirely sure, but it is with the Plex Movie Agent.

Thanks for this. I can do it like this if that’s how it works best.

To confirm, when you put the version in different folders, I assume the extras are only in 1 folder and only visible in the apps connected to that specific version of the film?

The way I have it now, extras were always visible for all versions, since they were all in the same folder. If they have to be attached to only one version, that’s a very minor change - just want to confirm how it works for you.

EDIT - I just realized you added or I missed your final comment addressing this question. I’ll try this out. Thanks

As long as the ONE movie in the folder with the extras is added first - I never have an issue with vanishing extras.

I put EVERY movie in a folder (well, FileBot does), but you may be able to sneak two movies in a second folder - I wouldn’t, but you may. You’re on your own there. That’s unknown territory for me.

I assume you want to do this once (again) and be able to trust it. What I would do in that case is for every movie with more than one version that has extras - start from scratch by removing everything, scanning, emptying trash and cleaning bundles - then add them back one at a time - movie with extras folder first.

‘To Confirm’ - I split my Merged Movie above, and to my horror - only the Movie in the folder with the extras shows the extras. This is the New Behavior for the New Agent. Unfortunately.

I Merged them again. Probably not how Plex would do it, but it’s how I did it.

Thank you for the response. I’ll try using separate folders since that seems to be what works now regardless. No problem.

Many apologies for what was now clearly hijacking your thread since I’ve learned that what I’m seeing is now expected behavior, regardless of what I got away with before.

I hope you’re able to find a solution!

Done. Check your messages and thanks.

Hey @drzoidberg33 did you ever get a chance to look at those log files I sent you? I just added a TV show and a Movie. Added the movie (main title only) and it showed up fine. Then added the TV show (no extras, TVDB Agent) came up fine, there’s lots of action related to it in the media scanner log. Next I added the movie extras, refreshed metadata. I saw the server activity spin quickly then stop so that was when I downloaded the logs. There was NO mention in any of the scanner logs of the new files I’d just added. The logs ended with a reference to the TV show I’d just added.

On a whim I switched to the legacy scanner and did a little file shuffling to get the scanner to kick in. Once it did it immediately picked up all of the extras.

There’s definitely something not right with the new scanner. It’s probably some edge case that exists on my setup. Let me know how I can help get it resolved. Till then I’m back to using the legacy scanner.

Yes, sorry I did look at them.

There was nothing really useful in there except that it showed that the extras files were just not being picked up. I’ve just submitted a change to add some new log lines to help track down a reason for this but that will only be in a future release.

Is it possible for you to test this same thing on a different platform? I see you’re running in Docker on Unraid, could you install a test PMS to another computer on the network and see if you see similar behaviour?

I think I may have found the cause of the problem. It’ll take a little time to test with new content though since I’ve got my library all sorted for now. I should be able to test more in the near future though.

On your suggestion I spun up a new instance of PMS on my laptop (OSX). I pointed it at the file share containing my movies. I limited to a single sub-directory with one of the new problem titles to keep the library size down. I checked the new title after it was added and there were no extras. I copied the files down to my laptop and created a separate movie library. The local files library picked up the extras. My first thought was permissions so I logged onto the file server and checked permissions - all the same. While doing that though (ls -la command) I noticed that there were a number of ._ files in the directory. OSX has a habit of creating those on network shares. It’s super annoying and I had turned it off but an OS update must have turned it back on. I removed those files and then the agent picked up all the extras once I refreshed metadata.

I had one more title that neither the new or the legacy agent would pick up the extras for. I checked that directory and there was one ._ file in there.

It looks to me like the new agent chokes in relation to local extras when it comes across any ._ file in the directory. The legacy agent apparently didn’t have this problem (mostly). I’ll do some more through checking next time I add a title with extras and report back. It’ll probably be next week sometime.

Thanks, that’s an interesting data point although I don’t see why that would affect things but at least it’s something I can test for :+1:

I can confirm that the ._file does impact extras from showing up. I have been having the same problem. I went into the files and cleaned up the ._file and did scan of library and a metadata refresh and POW they appeared. So to prove the theory I was able to get the ._file back into the directory and did same scan and refresh and Extras went away.

Thanks for the info. Your confirmation will hopefully help @drzoidberg33 and the rest of the Plex crew track down the issue. Can you post up the details of your server platform and version of server that you’re running in case it’s a platform specific issue?

Running the Mac OS Version 1.22.3.4523. This issue has been happening since i moved to the new Plex Movie agent last year. Thanks

FYI I just added a couple new titles with extras and the extras didn’t show up. Nuked the ._ files, refreshed metadata and bam there they were like magic.
