Plex Movie Agent isn't finding local extras

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4392

I recently switched to the new Plex Movie Agent and now it’s not picking up local extras when I add new content. I’ve done the plex dance, turned extras on and off, checked naming etc and the extras just aren’t showing up. I’ve checked other posts for ideas but I’ve gotten stuck and just can’t figure out what’s not working. It picks up Internet extras fine, just not local ones. Is there a setting to toggle on/off local extras?

Just double-checked this on my setup.
There should be no special setting for a library with the Plex Movie agent to recognize local extras. If you only added them after adding your movie to the library, make sure to let Plex refresh the metadata for that movie.

How exactly did you organize / name those extras alongside your movie file(s)?
Would you mind sharing a specific example?

I don’t understand how extras work. I’m fairly new to Plex and have put my entire DVD collection on it. I’ve read the articles that show 2 ways of setting up the extras, I have chosen to put all my extras in one folder off of the main TV show folder. So, I have the Criminal Minds DVD set, created a folder called Criminal Minds, inside that folder I have 15 folders, one for each season, plus an extra folder called featurettes that have all the extras for each season. Plex is not seeing this. I even put the -featurettes switch after each name, example of one is called
Season1 Special Features-featurette.mp4
Am I suppose to put Extra_Directory_Type in there somewhere?
Thanks.

Hey @tom80H, thanks for the response. I did refresh metadata when the extras didn’t show up. I put extras in the same folder as the main title and use the -extra_type naming method. In this specific case there are two extras with the movie. They are named:

Trailer-trailer.mkv
Vivian Maier’s Super 8 Footage-featurette.mkv

I’ve got hundreds of titles already in my library with probably thousands of extras and it all worked great with the legacy agent. It’s just with the new agent that I’m having problems and the problems are happening with every title I add. I feel that based on my success with the legacy agent that there’s something wrong with the new agent or with my setup and how the new agent is running.

Thanks!

AFAIK there should not be anything to enable. Can you post the xml for the movie

@BigWheel what do you mean by the xml? The XML from the HTTP API or something else?

Here is the HTTP API XML for the title in question:

thx. sorry i forgot to ask for logs as well.

The Plex Media Scanner Matcher.log after doing a refresh metadata should have something like this in it. It makes a new log after each refresh and saves last 6 by default one with no number being the newest

(I don’t use Docker but I would also double check permissions)

This is what I’ve got from the Plex Media Scanner Matcher Log:

May 04, 2021 21:02:49.475 [0x14554dae4700] INFO - Plex Media Scanner v1.22.3.4392-d7c624def - Docker Docker Container x86_64 - build: linux-x86_64 - GMT -05:00

If you do a normal scan does the scanner log list the file at all? Have you dou let checked permissions?

I checked permissions, they’re the same as the main title and as any other title that I’ve checked.

By normal scan do you mean a full library scan?

Yes I am hoping the regular Plex Media Scanner.log might have some info why it was ignored in case it did not see them as an extra.

I just ran a full library scan and there wasn’t anything added to the Plex Media Scanner.log file. All the entries were a couple hours old. I checked other logs to make sure it wasn’t an issue with the system time and other logs did show entries for the current time.

Edit: I do have debug logging enabled. Verbose logging is off.

In order to detect/update local extras, you need to perform Refresh Metadata, instead of a library scan.
Because technically, these are handled like metadata.

I did refresh metadata. It didn’t work.

I am having the same issues with the new Plex Movie agent. I previously had roughly 800 movies, nearly all with local extras, working great with the Plex Movie Legacy agent. I switched agents recently as recommended, and aside from all the extra work to re-split movies with multiple versions, I now have issues with local extras not showing up. I have found that the only workaround is to remove all extras from the folder, refresh metadata, and then re-add extras 1 or 2 at a time. I got all to be recognized again in that manner. Then, I split the movie (2 versions) and the extras now only show on 1 version but not the other. HELP! This was all working beautifully for 2-3 years with the old agent.

@timfultz I guess you should count yourself lucky. I add extras one by one and they still don’t populate at all. It’s super frustrating! I can see the server activity indicator spin when I add files so I know it sees something new there but nothing happens. The lack of any activity in the log file is weird.

Could you refresh one or two of the problem movies and then grab the full logs at Settings → Troubleshooting → Download Logs and send those to me.

I looked at this some more this morning. I started by doing a refresh of all metadata for the library. Poking around, I see that extras are okay for most titles. I only see a problem when there are multiple versions of a movie in one folder. In those cases, there are now no extras visible, whether the titles are split or not.

This impacts less than 10% of my library. For an example, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, I have 3 versions of the film in one folder, named as follows (starting with the folder):
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) - Director.mkv
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) - Theatrical.mkv
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) - Special.mkv

So multiple versions, rather than different resolutions. I usually split these into separate titles in Plex. With the old Plex Movie Legacy agent, it worked fine, and the extras were visible on all 3 titles in the apps. Now, with the new Plex Movie agent, the extras are either only visible on 1 of the versions or none of them after splitting.

I’m trying to gather more data. Shall I start a new post though - this looks like a specific case that’s different than the original post? Happy to collect logs as well.

Can you confirm that your library is set to “Plex Movie” as scanner and agent?
