Plex needs to improve the downloads feature

Ok, but if I post it here openly theres also a lot of private info in it.

Funny how everyone wants to complain about things not working but scoff at actually doing anything to help PLEX fix it. A few years back I ran into real issues when trying to process my music library because it was rather large. Over the course of a few weeks I must have sent in a dozen logs and beta tested a dozen server versions before the problem went away. It’s called helping PLEX fix ths problem. Or you can sit on your butt and complain. Your choice.

Can’t speak for everyone, but I set up a plex server and client just for testing and provided plenty of logs along with a detailed journal of what actions I took when, and which results I observed. From there the usability just went down

But yeah, you’re right if Plex isnt going to make the process smoother when they after two years still haven’t fixed the issue - I will scoff at helping them. And lets not forget - the old sync feature worked before they killed it off in favour of a non-functional download feature. The problem isn’t users not helping them.

I was told to send logs in DM when raising the same concern; ref https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-ios-download-feature-is-unusable-as-it-does-not-ever-complete-a-download/746425/188

If you’re going to participate, please do so in a positive and constructive way. Snarky commentary and unhelpful comments help no-one, and do not move towards solving issues.

Getting crash reports to submit the info you need is constructive, telling user to not submit crash reports isnt. Plex is setting the bar here, and expected to the professional party.

Having client fetch and submit logs also resolves issues with privacy, as opposed to posting logs publicly, it simplifies cases where user with issues isnt the server admin. That crash reports go to developers and not support seems like it should be possible to solve and lower the bar for getting plex the information plex need.

Why not pursue making this easier?

Crash reports are only submitted when there’s a crash. They don’t just submit all the time for every possible error or bug. No one said anything had to be public, and logs can be DM’d directly to an employee if requested, plus, you can scrub anything you think might be sensitive in them.

We’re asking people to give us the information we need to help resolve issues, and to not submit things that won’t help. Arguing about not wanting to do that, and it should be done another way helps no-one, and just delays dealing with actual root causes of issues. Please try and be constructive here, and not just argumentative.

let me know when you have sorted this out and we’ll see if things improve?
(the bit about updating the uninstallation docs so it actually removes all things plex if need be)

Is the lack of information in the UI going to be fixed?
No in progress download progress
No error messages when things fail
“Waiting to download” doesn’t tell you anything and it sits there for hours
The Downloads screen is confusing, it isn’t clear what is a subscription or a downloaded episode.
Plex needs to look at what Netflix and prime do, because what is here isnt working.

Well, the Plex employees have asked for logs and I haven’t seen anyone provide any - so here ya go!

@AldasG Your logs look fine. All your Downloads are requesting a transcode and we only do 2 transcodes at a time. The errors shown are wrong and I’ll look into that. Once one of the 2 are done downloading, one of the other 2 should start. Do those other 2 still show as error now?

@MovieFan.Plex Should I re-grab the logs? No failures are visible at this point (next day), but nothing has been downloaded either.

Yes both server and client logs.

I’m trying to view my movies in Downloads by title. Sort provides Title, Downloaded Time and Size as options. The latter two seem to work correctly. The Title sort however does not seem to work correctly and looks to sort them by Downloaded Time (when it was downloaded). Would be nice to fix this and be able to sort Downloads by Title.

Looks correct for me. Can you provide a screen shot? It should sort by Title. Keep in mind that sorting by title is based on the “Sort Title” field.

Thank you for picking this thread up @anon18523487 and for proactively looking to address the issues surrounding Downloads, it really is appreciated!

OP’s original post referenced background download support. Are you able to advise if Plex will ever add support on iOS for this?

IMO
The user experience without it, is just poor. I can’t think of a single other piece of software / app I use, where I need to have the program in the forefront for the download to complete.

Yes, exactly! Either support for background downloading or resumé after intterupted download would help a lot.

We are looking into both of these.
