Plex needs to respect .ignore files

I just installed plex and now that the first scan is done I’m going through and fixing anything that might have been miss identified. I get to my “Movies To Watch” librarie and noticed it’s showing me everything when it shouldn’t. I have a folder in it called “Movie Series With Upcoming Movies” which has linked folders in it for Movie Series that will be getting another sequel. It also has a .ignore file in it which for whatever reason PLEX is not respecting where Emby does respect. Is there any way to make PLEX respect the .ignore file and hide the contents of “Movie Series With Upcoming Movies”?

PLEX version 1.40.2

I think you need .plexignore not .ignore. See https://support.plex.tv/articles/201381883-special-keyword-file-folder-exclusion/

While I appreciate the quick reply I’ll be blunt IMO that it was STUPID of PLEX to create their own file instead of respecting something that is cross platform.

I haven’t heard of .ignore as a common cross-platform file type. So I googled. After skipping the first few dozen that are for Github (a popular code repository) since they use .gitignore (sounds like .plexignore), I found one off-hand comment about someone asking what this .ignore file he found. The reply was that it is a Android convention to ignore files in a directory. Another reply mentioning Dropbox uses .ignore.

Other than those examples (which I haven’t verified are accurate and common), I don’t see that .ignore file being a common cross platform filetype.

It is. it also works on Windows and Linux. It’s amazing Emby respects it.

.plexignore was chosen to avoid usage collisions with .ignore in the same way GitHub uses .gitignore

By having distinct filenames, you are afforded the freedom to have different ignore rules.

If you ultimately decide to symlink one to the other, that’s your option but be cautious of how rules are written for each use case.
