Plex no longer auto-merging 4K and 1080p releases for the same movie

I run 2 radarr instances, one for 1080 and one for 4K. Each go into their separate folders using Plex recommended naming conventions and both root folders go into the same Movies library. Prior to a couple of weeks ago Plex was auto-merging newly added movies without issue and would automatically play the correct version depending on the client, but something seems to have happened in a recent update to break this. Now I’m getting separate library entries for each file and I have to manually merge them. Is this just a bug or is there something I need to change to get Plex to auto-merge them again?

You probably changed the agent of your library without updating the existing items. Refreshing your metadata should bring up all the old items to the new agent.

Plex will only merge items it knows to be the same – for that it uses a combination of the agent and item ID… if items are matched using different agents, they won’t be recognized to be the same.
