Plex not creating thumbnails

Server Version#: 4.143.0
Player Version#: Web and Roku latest

The last week or two Plex has stopped either generating thumbnails on new video files. The files in question are all recordings from the DVR feature that play just fine, just no thumbnails, and older files still have their thumbnails - eg I have an episode of SNL from Feb 16th that has thumbnails but the episode from Mar 1st does not. Nothing in the system has changed other than server version updates.

Settings have Video Preview Thumbnails enabled as both a scheduled task and when media is added, and is enabled on all libraries.

Can you post your server logs and one of the filenames?

You have something going on with your file system:

Mar 05, 2025 21:02:56.561 [3024] WARN - Error scanning directory, we'll skip and continue: boost::filesystem::last_write_time: The system cannot find the path specified [system:3]: "E:\Media\TV\Recorded TV\KGW News at 5 (2014)\Season 2025"

and it does look like it is getting at least one thumb but is also throwing errors:

Not sure what E:\Media\TV\Recorded TV\.grab is but it may be causing issues if plex is scanning that instead of where the file should be.

Hrm, no drive errors or fragmentation reported, and it’s on a two-drive mirror that hasn’t changed. Sounds like the .grab folder is a temp folder created during recording/transcode, etc… It was empty. I just nuked everything in the recording folder and we’ll see what happens.

Deleting all the subfolders in the Recorded TV folder seems to have resolved the issue - something must have been corrupted for some reason
