Would be nice if there was a setting for NOT forcing landscape for playback.
I often put my tablet upright between my screens to watch the news or something.

Sure. While playing something, bring up the controls and go to Playback Settings. There is a setting to “Lock to landscape”. Turn it off. This setting will stick until you change it again.
