Plex on Android randomly stops playing music.

Mobile Platform: Android; Nexus 6P.
Plex Client Version: 5.8.0.475
Plex Pass: Yes
Server Platform: Drobo 5N
Plex Server Version: 1.3.3.3148 [Installing update at time of writing]

While streaming music either from NAS or from local storage (having used the feature to sync various items in my library) I have observed that the Plex app will - periodically - discontinue playing music. When opened in this state, Plex appears to still ‘think’ it’s playing music, as the roll ticker still crawls along the screen as does the time count for the particular song; however, when pressing the ‘next song’ button it advances but does not play music. When pressing pause then play it stops advancing the ticker and then resumes but does not produce music. It requires a restart of the application on the phone in order to resume playing music.

This has been an issue for a while now, and I’m getting pretty tired of it happening; I’m especially tired since it’s extremely inconvenient. You can’t simply pause and resume your music, you can’t skip to the next song to get it to resume, you have to go and actually dive back into your phone, bring the app up, close it, then restart it, then select your music again and hope that it doesn’t just happen again ten minutes later.

What’s going on here and how do we correct it?

Best tags xD I do have the same issue, and I think some people are reporting it with logs and stuff in the android section as well. It has been like this for months and both me and the gf has it on separate completely different phones. It’s such an obvious bug that I haven’t bothered reporting it.

What works for me though is this: if I change connection type on my phone (WiFi to cellular for example) it actually starts playing again. No pause or skip needed. It just carries on. So, I can put something on, and when it happens,. I just switch mode. Then after a while it happens again and I switch back. Rinse and repeat. For me it happens maybe every 30-40 minutes so it isn’t too bad but it sure is a bit annoying.

Cheers for the idea on the workaround, but that seems like more work than simply shutting down Plex and restarting it on my phone. Neither solution is elegant, and we shouldn’t be required to rely on either.

I’d like a real solution here, considering what I paid for this application. Plex folks, can we please get some acknowledgement on this issue? I know I’ve seen it before on these forums and it hasn’t been addressed. Someone else here has the same issue, and they too have seen others with it. So - while I’m extrapolating here - I don’t think this is an isolated issue.

I was just about to make a post similar to this since there hasn’t been any update on this for a while now, and it is obviously a bug that breaks the android app and makes it unbearable to use for music. Just got back from another business trip and I gave up using Plex for music because I couldn’t listen to one complete song on my flights.

A thread from the android section for the devs, in case they missed it.

Cheers for that link but they’re experiencing a different issue from what I am it looks like. My songs aren’t being truncated; when Plex breaks here it’s not simply ignoring the last few seconds of a song. The issue described in that link suggests the application still functions but simply ignores the last part of a song before advancing to the next.

To clarify, Plex stops playing entirely, as if it were suddenly muted. It doesn’t wait until the end of the song. It won’t play at that point if I pause and resume. Neither will it play if I adjust the volume. But the whole time it’s “muted” in this fashion the app appears to be just fine. The music progress ticker still chugs along, the timer for the song still counts, etc. Etc. I just don’t hear anything.

It occurs at random, sometimes ten minutes into listening, sometimes never. But rest assured it’s frequent enough to be extremely annoying (like while in the shower for instance, when it can’t be readily fixed). To fix it requires a shutdown and restart of Plex on the client device. No errors pop up either on the client or server, either
