Plex on Android still crashing when using external subtitles

Just chiming in - experiencing this with the Xbox Series X App + Amazon FireStick Plex app,
Android 11 OP7 Pro is affected too.
However web-player and Windows App appears to be eating mp4 + external .ass and .srt files fine.
I created home-made Subs for a show as there were none. They came out as .ass, and plex crashes almost everywhere with them.
I tried an old suggestion to convert them to .srt instead - however this exact thread is what I’m experiencing.
external .srt or .ass + .mp4 files causes crash except on Webplayer and Windows App.
I can’t remember this being a problem some months ago, so it feels like something changed?

Any idea when/if this will be fixed? So tired of having my Sony TV Plex app crash when playing videos with embedded ASS subtitles!

Thanks in advance!

I do not have any updates.

Hi PLEX, I encounter the same issue as the original post on Sony Xperia 5.

The App version is 8.20.0.26605.

When playback a video with SSA subtile selected, it always crashs (app restart and go back to the custom main page). But it works smoothly with SRT or no subtitle.

How can I help you to debug this issues? Not sure how to provide logs on andorid device.

That is the issue I’ve already identified. Just waiting for the team to get around to fixing it.

I’m also affected by this issue, hopefully, the team will push a fix soon.

**bump

what’s the deal with this? 90% of my content is played with subs. I’m someone who’s never had issues with subs and everything was working fine the last few years then out of the blue since last week or so everything played with external subs (any format) is crashing the app. I had an outstanding server update (linux), so thought maybe that might fix it, but no…

and no it’s not my server or the files, everything works on the desktop and web player…

some people seem to have luck with srt files, not me. All my subs are ssa/ass with an extra converted set of srt, none work all of a sudden…

Hello. This issue is tormenting me for months now. Is there any news when it will be fixed?

Hi I have encountered the same issue. I have multiple devices using Android plex player eg. LG smart TV, Epson smart projector and Cellphone. They all will crash when I play a video with external SSA or SRT subtitles. The server with AMD 5700g is powerful enough for the transcoding. But as dongandn12 mentioned in the thread, this only happens when I play the library using Absolute Series Scanner/HAMA TV, a third party scanner for anime. It works fine for Plex Movie or Plex TV for the same video file and subtitle, though it can’t recognize most of the anime.

But it is not solely due to the scanner as it plays fine on a web player. That is probably why it is hard to identify and reproduce and even when the issue is identified, it is hard to fix as it involves two parties of developers.

Hope this will resolve soon.

Any progress to report here?
Looks like this issue has been known for the last 9 months.

This would be a great test case for a public-facing bug tracker, by the way.

Bumping this up as I have the same issue

Another bump. Seriously no news or updates on this? Been months now, and still crashing for me and many others I’m sure.

bumping, getting crashes with files using srt external subs on both android phone and google tv. can a bug report be filed? nothing useful looking in the verbose server logs, but definitely reproducible

i find the same question.android app will crash when i open the video with “.ass” subtitle.
ver:8.26.2.29389

Are there also ASS/SSA subtitles? If you only have srt subtitles and it is crashing, that is not the same issue. Please start a new topic with details.
