Have this problem since longtime
The Plex Android and Android TV apps use the ExoPlayer media player, which is part of Android.
ExoPlayer has limited support for SSA/ASS subtitles.
Due to the limited support, when such subtitles are enabled, Plex Media Server must burn them into the video stream. This requires the video to be transcoded.
If your server cannot transcode the video (or transcoding is disabled) you will receive an error message.
As a workaround, in the Plex Android app, go to Settings → Advanced → Subtitles. Change Burn Subtitles from Automatic to Only image formats.
The Plex app will now treat SSA/ASS subtitles as plain text (SRT) subtitles. They will not have to be burned into the video stream. However, formatting information, such as color & screen position, will be lost.
