Plex on Apple TV 4K (2022) won't announce as player (to be controlled from Plex on other devices)

Together with the latest Plexamp update this issue seems fixed for me. The AppleTV shows up consistently and allows control.

I am giving up on this. There is no way my latest Plex app on the latest Apple TV4k announces as a player without having to toggle the Announce-setting in the Plex app preferences on every restart of the Apple TV and often even a restart of the Plex app. I’m always on the latest server, latest ATV firmware … everything latest.

Apparently this only affects me, learning from this thread by now. Hence I built a different network with a different router, just for Plex-purposes, but I get the same result all the time: The remote function of all my players (ios, Windows) work – everything can be controlled by everything – BUT the ATV4k app. Without toggling Announce as a player, it doesn’t show up in any other Plex-app on phone, iPad or pc.

This has to be something in the ATV-app. Too bad - I can live without the brilliant control via my iPhone, but it’s kind’a eating me :upside_down_face:

I’m still having the identical issue. I suspect many others are too, but are now in the habit of just toggling that setting when needed.
@BigWheel Any chance this issue is still being worked on?

I will poke folks again about it. From what I know there are memory issues that are affecting Apple TV which this may be a symptom of too. You may have noticed libraries that you unpinned from home becoming pinned again.

Thanks for poking into this once more. Much appreciated!!

Just checking again for any update, this continues to be a pain point.

Indeed. Very much so.

Do y’all have multiple local servers on same network as apple tv?

I’ve got two Plex servers on that subnet (only one usually online), and one other on a different routable subnet.

I have just one Plex-server.

Just one Plex Server.

After the latest update for my Apple TV app, the problem seems to be solved in Plexamp
But wait, sceptic that I am, I will be testing until I am satisfied it is really solved.

My ‘normal’ Plex apps, on my server, iMac, and my IOS devices, still can’t connect to my Apple TV as a remote.

Guess what? Apple TV just disappeared again from my optional list of sources in Plexamp.

After going to ‘options’, ‘advertise as player’ it is again visible in my list of sources.
But when I want to use it, I get the dreaded ‘Could not switch to player’ message.

So when is this going to be solved?? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Is there an update on this issue? I just picked up a new Apple TV and I’m having this same issue on version 8.24.

No updates at all as far as I’m aware. I do hope that it’s at least still listed on an issue tracker somewhere…

No, as I feared, it is not going to happen :weary:. There seems to be a wider settings memory issue.

Any news or developments in solving this issue?

I’ve not heard anything and the issue remains.

My situation has now degraded further—starting a new video playing on the ATV is nearly always failing. Seems it goes to start then just sits at 00:00:00. Pause then play lets it continue, at least until the next item in the playlist. Really wish the ATV was a higher priority for the Plex team.

Celebrating one year we have this issue. Any news out there?

Not wanting to jinx things, but as of right now, this looks like it might finally be fixed for me. Haven’t needed to manually toggle the player advertisement for a week. Also found a workaround for the HomePod audio issue by enabling the old audio player.

That’s good news for you and makes me think that maybe maybe maybe it is a matter of environment settings after all. Nothing has changed over here though, notwithstanding newest updates, reinstalling the app, logging off and in again, the lot … : I need to re-announce the AppleTV every session. Enjoy your control - one day I shall be living the life too!
