I have an XBOX ONE S and a Samsung HW-K950. I know Plex on the XBOX won’t pass through ATMOS but every movie I play through Plex makes my Soundbar act like it’s getting an ATMOS signal (blue light in corner of soundbar lights up and DOLBY ATMOS scrolls across the front display). This happens on 5.1, DTS movies that are not ATMOS. Any ideas?
What happens with other Apps (VLC or Media player)?
Might just be how Xbox Audio settings are set ?

That’s because you set your XBOX to output ATMOS. It will upmix anything into ATMOS and output it.

For me thats not the case. When I set it to Dolby Atmos then it will be PCM while idle, Dolby Audio while there is any audio (game, video, UI sounds) and only when i play specific Atmos content (Dolby app, Blu-ray, some Netflix movies) it shows Atmos.
Any content played through a player like Plex, even if it is a file that is supposed to have Atmos, it ether has no sound or just samples down to normal Dolby Audio on my setup. I have the Atmos promo/test video in multiple formats to test and its never Atmos through plex or any player, but playing the same video from the Dolby app, it does say Atmos and the sound quality if way better.
PS: my audio is the LG SJ9 soundbar with Atmos

Set your video from Auto to HDMI and then try to set it to ATMOS again. Then everything will be output as ATMOS. You may need to turn off CEC on your soundbar.
