No further monetary costs. Your only likely costs will be the time you waste trying to get it to work properly (which may never happen).
That bad? was thinking a HomeRun HD tuner
I have my Plex server on a windows machine (QuadHD tuner) with clients on Windows, FireTV and Android. It’s been a rough two years. I paid for the pass and have never used it because of problems. I use something else (that’s even free). I wholeheartedly do NOT recommend Plex Live TV/DVR.
The biggest problem for me is not being able to record what you want to record. Shows will often not schedule to record (for example, if the EPG data is wrong or just missing). Plex has no manual record (by time/channel) ability that would allow you to work around problems like that. So if regularly not being able to record what you want to record is a “feature” that appeals to you, then Plex might be for you – otherwise, I do NOT recommend it.
that stinks, was really thinking this would be good and seemed fairly simple. Was going to run via Plex on Synology NAS
What’s your setup instead?
The investment in a HD HomeRun Tuner won’t be wasted. All the major software works with it (Plex, Emby, Channels…) And you could do the monthly Plex Pass to see how it works for you. A buddy of mine uses it and has no complaints. It wouldn’t work for me reliably and I use Channels DVR instead.
Good luck
Chris
Thanks, looks like theres an app for synology as well Channels — Channels DVR Server
Channels DVR pretty much seems to be the gold standard for DVR’s these days. Emby also works as advertised and could be a bit cheaper in the long run since Emby offers a lifetime license option while Channels does not. Both offer monthly subscriptions so it’s easy/cheap enough to check them both out and see which fits your needs better.
