Think I’m doing this per your instructions… says it’s going to take 20 mins? Does that sound right?
Sounds about right. It depends on your CPU
So, my difficulity is I have about 400 movies …

Thanks Chuck I took Plex off the NAS and reinstalled on my comp. where it used to be before Plex went bad.
It (Plex) will NOT open on my comp and that is the genesis of my complaint/problem.I’d need a set of log files from the windows computer to try and figure out what went wrong.

(scroll down to ‘Manually finding log files’, zip up the whole folder and attach them here)
Hi Otto- I took Plex off my comp and reinstalled onto NAS (Per Chuck). I would be happy to reinstall on my comp if that would help. The User logs are still on my comp and I have attached them. Let me know your thoughts… and thanks for your time.

Is that all? ![]()
There are a number of ways to automate the conversion. @cayars is the author of the famed conversion-scripts-from-hell ![]()
I hear ya… I just keep remembering how great it worked when it was installed on my comp and reading from the NAS. Then that popup happened asking about secure connections and it all went to hell. Otto did write (see above) and I sent him the logs. I’ll get back to you when this conversion finishes. Thanks Chuck!
Anytime!
I could give you the ffmpeg commands and a Linux script. @cayars has them for Windows. Figured you’d like it directly from the horse himself instead of the horse’s xxx (me) hahahaha
Thanks! Appreciate it.

Hm, the logs only show that you had Plex Server running on your computer last time about a month ago.
And they show that you lost connectivity to your NAS.
Plex expected it to find under the IP Address 192.168.1.6
I also see that you have pointed Plex Server to your NAS via a different way as well: \\NAS\video
I can also see that you almost never include the release year in the file name of your movies.
This will make the matching process harder. But that is another topic, which we’ll tackle later if necessary.
Now let’s try and get PMS running again.
First I’d take a look into the preferences of your NAS and verify that it still has the same IP address and the same hostname NAS.
@ChuckPA might be able to help you with that.
Now download a fresh installation file from the DOWNLOADS link above.
Go to the control panel of Windows - Software
and deinstall the current installed version of Plex Server from there
do not use 3rd party ‘uninstaller’ software. Do also not use any kind of “Registry cleaners”.
Now open regedit.exe and navigate to the key
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server
search for the sub-key LocalAppDataPath
If it exists, does it still contain C:\Users\Boss\AppData\Local\
or does it point to a different location?
If so, where? If it points to your NAS or a drive letter that doesn’t exist currently, simply delete the sub-key LocalAppDataPath from the registry.
Then install the newly downloaded version of Plex Media Server and reboot Windows.
I took it out. D/L Plex now… bb to you in a sec
Otto- Do I need to delete Plex Server from the NAS before I put it on my comp?
Duke,
No. You can run more than one server concurrently. Only remote access requires special handling if you’re configuring remote access with manually forwarded ports.
Chuck and Otto. Many, many thanks for your excellent advise and attention to my problem. I’m happy to say, Otto, that once I deleted the registry line and reinstalled, Plex found everything and is now working very well. Thanks.
Chuck, learned so much working with you! Thanks again fo everything. FYI, the mp4 did play when put on the NAS. However it took almost 45 minutes (Intel i5) and I think, at least at this juncture, I will forgo this process for 400 items. So, thanks again!
One last question, will it make any difference if, as I move forward, if I create mp4 files and have them on the NAS with the MKV’s?
Thanks again guys!!
It won’t really make any difference because the primary point is MPEG2VIDEO vs H.264 (the re-encode process). Both MP4 and MKV can carry either format so there is little to be gained without making the primary codec change
