When I go to download different podcasts and select “Keep 3 latest” or “Next episode” or any setting I get random episodes downloading. The Daily podcast by NY Times has like 700 episodes and when I do “Keep 3 most recent” Plex syncs like 3 episodes from February 2017. Other podcast show entries operate similarly. Please fix this for all podcasts. Make the “keep” section more persistent.
Podcasts have basically been abandoned by Plex, do yourself a favor and save a lot of frustration and get a real Podcast app like Overcast or PocketCast.
I prefer the ease of adding so many URL sources to one place and streaming via browser too. But on the go I want this to work. And yeah, its pretty crazy they dont have the same capability as some free podcast app. Like guys… free apps can do this. Buy the code you need if you cant do it lol.
Where’s the announcement they’ve abandoned a fairly recently introduced feature?
He’s conjecturing. But tbh, it feels like it. This feature in app is poorly functioning.
But a lacking features doesn’t make it abandoned. Yeah it’s basic but it works just fine. I’ve played with it and can’t really think of anything lacking with it. What else does it need?
I quote “When I go to download different podcasts and select “Keep 3 latest” or “Next episode” or any setting I get random episodes downloading. It not features, it core functionality. It just does not work correctly.
Wrong episodes download.
Wrong episodes added to the queue (all of them get added)
Episodes lose playback position
Episodes do not get marked as played.
All core functions of any podcast player. And there have been little or no updates for any of this since its introduction.
The issue of wrong downloads seems to be especially on podcasts with large libraries (hundreds of episodes). Honestly if Plex could force filter a custom RSS in the background that would only show the 20 most recent episodes and then we trigger the “keep 3 recent” would only pull from the 20 being displayed this may be a workaround, but adding a feature to solve a function seems stupid when literally every other app does this. My thing is I just prefer Plex for option to continue in browser.
Overcast lets you play from their website.
Believe me I would like Plex to work also, but it just does not and I have given them plenty of time to fix. The killer feature for me is “Next 3” because it “Holds” the position if I don’t listen to a podcast in awhile. Other apps you tell it to keep 5 and after 5 unplayed the last one gets dropped from the downloads. With Next 3, they will always be on my phone waiting for me. Well, if it worked, but it does not, along with the other bugs I mentioned, its a no go.
hey @Anijake I’m having better luck now. So I created a managed profile for myself (but I didnt include access to my media libraries). Maybe its TOO many things, maybe this wont help at all. BUT I did do that. Then I added my podcasts to that managed profile. I did, for some reason have a bit of trouble marking episodes as “played”, I had to toggle like one episode before I marked the whole series… there was a bit of toggling. Then I went to download most recent 3 or whatever. Now, “The Daily” NY Times podcast gave me some fits and downloaded a weird episode in the middle but its always done that. I deleted those weird one offs manually, I may have toggled to “recent 5” and back. But other than that my other podcasts (and now that one) seem to be behaving. I’m still testing the download feature here but idk, maybe just a different profile?
Oh and also NY Times The Daily doesnt like to show new episode for like an hour after released by other outlets but whatever.
This still bears testing but I’m finding a smoother experience under a managed profile only for podcasts.
Maybe this test of a constant and variable will be valuable
Also did you ever use itunes links for the RSS input? I’ve got a feeling that messed with my Plex podcasts especially when itunes changed the way they spread podcasts. the URL’s arent the same.
Wow, thats a lot of hoop jumping just to get something to maybe work.
I rather just use a app that actually works.
I admit it and its weird I had more trouble marking as played. BUT it also seems cleaner not having my regular media in there.
