Our friends at Plex seem to think that they’re a streaming service deserving of a subscription fee. Instead of the application that they are. I’m not going to pay someone else to watch my own stuff. They have continuously added on services and things that no one asked for while neglecting core functionalities. Sounds like it time to move on, again.
Yeah I’m confused what they’re charging for now? Which parts of the service are they paywalling? I’ve heard about Jellyfin as a sub?
Their communication sucks, by their own admission. They are paywalling remote streaming (outside your local network) to any server that does not have an existing plex pass.
If you or a friend has a server without a plex pass then you will need a streaming pass for that in order to access it remotely (outside of the lan).
If you or a friend has a server with a plex pass then you will not need anything else to access that server (outside of the lan). It will work as it always has.
They are paywalling access to your own server when not within your house. You must pay Plex a pound of flesh to do so. Either in the form of Plex Pass, or a monthly “remote watch pass”.
I am not paying anything for this bug prone crap. I have had it for 8 years and not one month has gone by without some stupid glitch. I don’t know how many times I have re-installed. Goodbye Plex! There are many more programs that do what you do for free.
True. But for how long? Dev costs money and all these apps start small but eventually need funding, just like Plex did.
Emby charges for all the good features like transcoding and remote access. Jellyfin is completely free but much harder to set up and get remote working. Kodi is local only. It may have remote with some plugins and extra work.
Sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you don’t. Personally I am hoping to use a better player app to access my server while Emby matures a little more and then I will most likely make the switch because Plex is only going to move more and more to VOD.
Seems like they’re going to go the same way as any of those other apps, when we see functionality loss, The community is just going to move on! It’s what they’ve always done. Remember when Napster suddenly claimed to be a music service. Not to take you too far back
Oh I do remember that, and it was the death of Napster as I recall. People don’t take these big changes lightly. Plex has, imo, completely lost their way. They’ve lost sight of their users and community and have succumb to either feature creep or investors, or just bad leadership in general. It’s been kind of a slow digression over the last 5+ years but I know this whole “new experience” has pushed many of us to the breaking point.
Have any of y’all used Jellyfin? Is this a viable substitute?
I only use Plex within my home, so I don’t think these changes will affect me? But I’d like to future proof my library.
If you don’t need remote streaming, then yes, look into jellyfin or Kodi
