Plex server and NAS software?

Hello,

I’m considering using an old PC I have lying around as a NAS using maybe FreeNAS or Amahi or something similar.
I already have 2 3TB WD MyCloud and they are getting full. I need to increase my storage capacity.
It would be much cheaper to simply add a HDD or two to a PC setup as a NAS then getting another WD MyCloud device.

Can I run Plex Media server on such software NAS?
(Amahi do have a Plex plugin but it is not an official port. I’d rather use an official supported version)
Thanks
Any recommendation or things to look for?

I use unraid and I know FreeNAS has a big following with Plex users as well.
Both of those you can run Plex within the NAS and get what you are looking for.
Amahi might but I am not familiar with it.

Really anything that can run docker you can run the official Plex docker and get support
https://hub.docker.com/r/plexinc/pms-docker/

I would say both of those are Linux based so you should be familiar with a bit of Linux in order to support your system.

Thanks Nokdim for the answer.
I did dabble a bit with Linux, enough to install it and set it up on a PC or laptop.
Mind you, you don’t need to know much these days to install Ubuntu and get it running.
Docker is another thing though. I read the link you provided but I’m not sure I understand all I read there.
FeeNAS seems to be quite popular as a NAS so I might go that route after all.
I’ll try to locate some forums talk directed to its usage with Plex and learn a bit more on that before diving in.

Thanks again for your help.
