Plex Server crashes on Win10 while overclocked

I am running an i7 6700k overclocked to 4.6ghz and it is very stable in games/benchmarks/aida64 but when I try to use plex media server on the system it causes a blue screen. I have tried to retrieve plex logs but they are not created during these crashes (i disabled startup and tried to find them several times to no avail). Also, never have any crashes when not overclocked at 4.0ghz. I thought it might be cooling problems but all of the blue screens occured at ~70 *C and under medium to low load. I assume it is some sort of compatibility error with plex and ocing the processor?

Welcome to the Forum.

Directly from the ‘Overclockers Handbook’:
‘Caution, proceed at your own risk’.

Really nice CPUs are bricked every day when the design specifications are exceeded by users in an attempt to get a little more horsepower. If you have to add a Blower and a Nitrous Oxide injector system to your YUGO in order to keep up with traffic on the freeway - maybe you should just take a back-road.

I have an AMD FX-8350 running at 4019Mhz (stock) and am an avid gamer. Plex and Games run on the same box. Games blister through this thing on an ‘adequate’ AMD Radeon R9 380 while Plex is Direct Playing up to 3 items in the background. It never occurred to me to try to get more performance out of this thing - 'cause I would really like for it to continue to work for a while longer before the natural upgrade cycle has ended. If I start dropping a few frames here and there I’d much rather bring some game setting down a tick or two (I probably can’t see any difference either way at my age) than to exceed design specs. I’m funny that way.

I have a Handbrake job running as we speak and have E6 of the new Twin Peaks going as well. I’m pretty sure more performance won’t help me get a better grip on this David Lynch Acid Trip than I’ve gotten so far, but I just can’t help myself - I must continue. It’s kinda like starting Eraserhead (1977)… you have to see it to the end. Kind of like when your skis go over the point of no return on the Olympic Ski Jump and you think: ‘Uh-Oh… this was a bad idea’. Enjoy the ride - it may be your last.

I think you answered your own question - Plex runs fine at CPU design specifications.
I really doubt Plex is going to run any better amped up on Methamphetamine and Red Bull anyway.
I’m also certain Plex Devs have a lot more to do than to worry about this ‘non-problem’ - but, you never know. They’ve made some epic poor decisions recently - maybe we can add this one to the list.

I offer the above with the deepest respect for a fellow gamer.
Have a great day.

Hello,
Don´t believe it is an issue with Plex. Your OC isn´t stable!
I bet it crahses when it Comes to transcoding.

If you want a stable OC then try prime 95 with
1344k =Vcore
512 and 576K =Cache/Uncore
For RAm
768K =Agent/IMC
800K =Vdimm
1.5std

some also take OCCT

look it up in the Internet.

Turns out my OC was running too hot when Plex cranked up the transcoder. Somehow the 100% usage from the transcoder gets it hotter than the 100% usage from the stress tests and it hits the 94 C ceiling pretty fast.

Get those hairballs out of the air holes.

Current load here: 94%
Current CPU temp - 162F
(CPU or GPU temp reaches 170F and the covers come off for maintenance)

All systems report normal.
