Sorry, forgot to check this thread for updates. Thanks for this, I found my issue (a file recorded with Plex DVR on December 1), I removed it this morning and we’ll see if my server crashes tomorrow. I agree with @leejk, it would be nice to have a permanent fix so this doesn’t occur in the future. Kind of surprising calling an external tool (ffmpeg) on a relatively minor task can take all of PMS down.

Like everyone else, confirming that removing the bad recording “fixed” the crash.

It would be nice to get some sort of confirmation, from Plex like if the bad recordings were the result of a previous PMS build or it’s still ongoing, which I think is the case.

I’ve seen a couple beta updates come through but it’s difficult to tell in the release notes if this issue got resolved. Any update that you are able to share @anon18523487?

No, this specific issue hasn’t been solved yet. The thumbnail generation should not be crashing PMS so it’s taken a bit to figure out why it is.

I tried sample given above here Plex Server Crashing Because of Thumbnail Generation - #27 by ibrewster and it did not crash for me (I am using a development build but this area has not changed for a while)

May be you are now getting the crashes referebced by @Olli above Plex Server Crashing Because of Thumbnail Generation - #49 by Olli

If thumb preview generation is still causing crashes, would need a fresh sample file to test to reproduce the problem

I have not experienced any more crashing with this issue once I removed the offending recording but wanted to see if that was due to luck or some code changes that were made. FWIW - I have since switched over to the beta release stream.

Hello all, I saw people having success re-enabling thumbnail generation so I re-enabled mine a couple days ago and last night it began to crash again.

I have attached my plex media server log file right as it crashed. Please let me know if you see anything. I see a move file error and a tv show error in there. I have since deleted both of these files to see if that resolves my issue tonight.

Sorry to have taken long to get to your post.

Unfortunately you have disabled debug logging on the server and ao the log file does not have any clues. Please enable debug logging and restart the server - see https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/

Also the server logs is not just the Plex Media Server log file - there are also other relevant files - eg the crash uploader logs in this specific instance - it is always best to attach here the zipped server logs file that you download through the Plex Web Troubleshooting settings web page
