Plex Server Pooling

Here a thought and I’m not sure if that has been brought up or requested. But i currently work for a data center and one of my thoughts was this. Lets say me and 2 of my friends Jon and Joe all have our own separate libraries and lets say we all have roughly the same content but there are plenty of times when one of us has something the other one doesn’t whether that’s a T.V. show. movie, or whatever. What if there was a way to pool all our libraries into one giant library (mind you the end user could choose what libraries are a part of his active pool) So I could click lets say “My Pool” and it takes me to a giant library with all our content combined and we can see all each-others content in one easy to use library. Then to take it a step further lets say, that I choose to watch the gladiator, if all of us have it Plex decides which file will give me the best playback and plays it from that server if its online. Then lets say I choose to play gladiator and 10 users are currently streaming something off my server and Jon’s server but Joe has no one streaming at this point Plex could decide that Joe is the best option to stream from because of his current load. Basically what we will have created is a giant Plex library across multiple users with the ability to balance traffic load and optimize content delivery. Plus we eliminate the task of having to switch between libraries all the time. Now this doesn’t have to be a forced feature but it could maybe be an option whereas all users who want to be a part of the pool and opt in or out any time at which point that library will be updated based on server owner participation or not. I know this would be a valuble feature simply because i run into this all the time with my family. Someone is always asking me what server do i go to for this show or that movie. For example myself and a few friends share our libraries with my parents but they alway get confused on what content is in what server why cant we have the option to combine or pool them somhow? It sort of like a data-center Big-IP F5 pool environment in terms of load balance. These are just thoughts me and some coworkers were kicking around. I know there are limitations and flaws in my thinking I’m sure. But I was curious to see everyone’s thoughts.

Yeah my best friends and I have about ~80% the same content. Would be nice to pool our servers so that people can stream from whoever has the lowest load. I’d want an option to appear as a ‘hidden’ server to friends that belong to my friend, but not me. So those people can stream common content from me, but not browse my library directly.

There are a number of existing requests for this feature. Rather than spreading votes across several threads, you’d be better off adding your vote to one of those (Voting is achieved by clicking ‘Like’ on the first post in a thread).

Or everyone could just accept that Plex never does what Plex does not think of and the occasions where these feature requests actually get implemented are simple a coincidence of Plex’s desires coinciding with the desires of some users.

Plex will do as Plex wants without any regard for what is posted here.

I’m getting a little tired of this whiny-ass bull. If you’re so pissed off at Plex, why don’t you go play with Emby for a while, @Elijah_Baley , instead of crapping all over everyone else’s threads?

I do not much care what you are getting tired of! As far as Emby goes I have tried it and hated it.

As I have said MANY times Plex (The software) is the best solution that exists for my media usage but Plex (The company) is moving, and has been for a while, in a totally wrong direction. Choice and customization is being reduced while trying to force everyone into the same little box of media viewing.

But I do understand that it is easier to attack the person than it is to actually debate the points being made.

This is a user forum and I can post what I will, within the bounds of good taste. But I do say I am sorry for offending your feelings. I do not want to make anyone uncomfortable by saying what I truly believe.

From Community Guidelines:
“Stay on topic in discussions. Don’t rant, troll, or otherwise try to gain attention and distract from the topic.”

I submit that bitching about Plex’s attitude or business direction in threads that deal with feature requests or functional issues does not conform to that guideline.

As said by @beckfield this is a duplicate, please try to be sure you search for existing requests before you create a new one. Locking.
