I don’t understand with all of these massive cool features added to plex why we still haven’t got a run as service option.
I have to have my server which also functions as a gaming pc auto login which I don’t like so I put a shortcut to the screen lock command in the startup folder to lock the screen for security after login.
While I know some hacks have been done to add this, but why hasn’t plex just integrated it? What’s the hold up? What issues would this cause? It seems like a huge oversight so there must be a reason it’s not an option, I do not want to install or run 3rd party enthusiast open source software to accomplish it.
What’s the deal here, I would think after the many years plex has been around it would finally get added
If you run Plex server as a system service on Windows, you lose access to the hardware decoder.
It is a restriction of how Windows works. Until this restriction can somehow be removed, there is no point in developing an “official” service implementation.
The “hacks” like you call them work perfectly fine, including updating PMS. So if you want it, you can do it already. With the above mentioned restriction.
Got ya, yes I don’t want to loose server side hardware buffs, that’s exactly why I didn’t want to use some workaround. I’ve done a stress test on my server and got 5 machines streaming at the same time with good 1080 resolution. Presumably this is due to putting every available resource in use. While I might not ever need 5 streams, I do want the best performance for 4K good quality files
