Plex Server Support for Raspberry Pi

I've seen a few posts about getting Plex Server working on a Raspberry Pi. And I've seen RasPlex supporting Plex as a client. But I haven't seen anything official on when or if Plex developers are going to create an official Plex Server for the Raspberry Pi.

Could we get an idea if this is something that is going to be available or are we SOL with this? Thank you.

The Pi would fall into the category as a NAS most likely, lightweight processor that's main benefit for a NAS is low power consumption for 24/7 operation (also an ARM processor).  That being said it is being used as a NAS but, not by the masses... with limited development resources you the Plex team will likely ask where it will get the best bang for the buck and I do not see Pi as a server a priority.

The main issue with pi servers is the lack of transcoding resources... TV's/iDevices/Android devices often need to use plex's transcoding functionality which a smaller processor can not provide.  That being said it is a very good lightweight frontend (even that has had issues with being slow).

I would not except to see this soon since there is limited demand... (BTW the plex team did not create rasplex it was Dale doing it as a 3rd party which could happen with PMS)

Finally, there were a lot of views of this posts without any answers... you might want to be a little more careful how you ask questions on a project you are not offering a solution to... saying you a SOL is not quite an accurate statement when, from what I have seen in three years, plex being the most widely supported platform with the exception of XBMC...

Hi swarmier,

Thanks for the update on this. It does clear a few things up as far as RaspPi being used as a Plex server. Though I agree, the processing power of the RaspPi being limited, I saw it as more of a home solution rather than a service provided to many. But I do see your point.

I will be sure to keep my posts more accurate in the future. My intent was not to mislead anyone or get any hopes up on this. I was just looking for an answer on a possibility that I couldn't find anywhere else.

Thanks again.

If you are in your house and using direct-play clients you should be fine with any NAS... its only in a transcoding situation and even one client can cause constant buffering.

Devices that tend to need transcoding are phones/tablets/idevices/chromecast... if you are using a PC/MAC as your frontend you will be fine...

I personally am a roadwarrior and though I do not transcode often in the house, when I am on the road with my macbook air I turn the bandwidth down to 720kbs... my synology NAS had a hard time with this (about the same CPU i believe as the Pi)
