Plex connect on raspberry Pi

Hi all,

I’d like to install the plex server on a raspberry Pi (http://www.raspberrypi.org/technical-help-and-resource-documents).

Do you think that it's possible? As it is a Linux architecture, I can use the existing code or there are lot of modification to do?

No idea, since I don't use neither ATV nor PlexConnect nor Raspberry, but....

One small Q though:

Why use the Raspberry as a gateway for your ATV, and not installing a client directly on your Raspberry?

Maybe hes not using it on a TV and just for a Server purpose. It should work tho

Many thanks for your quick response :)

Currently I'm using plexPlexConnect on my Mac in order to be able to watch my HD movies (mkv) and TV shows on the appleTV...

So now I'm looking for a way to install this server on anther equipment in order to avoid left my mac running all the time.

You would crush that raspberry, unless it was a guarantee that the file wasnt going to be transcoded (even then that raspberry will die just doing metadata updates and database cleanups) it's not designed to be a server in any way just a good client.  If I am wrong I will be more than happy to eat crow, however given many users have tried to use atom based NAS's and the such for plex and have had mixed to poor results, I would think the raspberry which is even more underpowered when it comes to raw power.

Didn't even know you could install a PMS on it?

I was ref. to use it as a client, and skip the ATV.

PlexConnect is not a server, I think you both misunderstood what it does

I know that...It's a gateway...What I meant was.....Why install PlexConnect on the Raspberry, in order to use ATV, when you instead simply could install Plex Client on the Raspberry, and ditch the ATV

Indeed PlexConnect is not a server it is just a package to use Plex Media Server through the Apple TV...

But you are right it is not possible to use Raspberry Pi as a Plex Media Server, more detail bellow:

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=52315&p=402966

Actually it seems to be possible:

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/54447-raspberry-pi-plex-media-server/

And why install it on the Raspberry Pi? The goal is to be able to stream from the Pi to all my Idevices :)

to all my Idevices :)

That part was missing in your origen Q, so I thought you only had one iDevice.

Now the subject of this thread talks about PlexConnect, which is indeed possibe, but you are now talking about the complete media server, which might be possible, according to the thread you found, yet still a, IMHO, a very bad idea, since the Raspberry Pi is running a very lowend CPU, and as such, can't do any transcoding.

It can act as a client pretty well, but as a server, I would look for other options

I do agree which device you recommend to run plex server ? I have chosen a Raspberry Pi because it is cheap :)

Cheapest would most likely be an old laptop, with an i3 CPU and a couple of Gb Ram.

That way, it has enough power to transcode, storage could be on external USB drives, and it doesn't use much power, with screen shut down etc.

Also doesn't create too much noice

Any other recommendation to setup a server with linux?

Any other recommendation to setup a server with linux?

Not really....If you know Linux, then go with the distro you prefer,  as long as it's one that Plex support
