Plex Server very poor Photos quality - where are we?

I’m not alone complaining about Photo quality when served from Plex.
Especially when seeing them on nice 4K TV screens OLED screens.

Initially i tough it was related with RAW (CR2) decoding but it’s the same with simple jpgs.
When seeing them directly on a TV from a USB stick photos are very crisp which isn’t the case with Plex.

So me question is: where are we regarding this matter now , almost in 2018 (i’ve beeing seeing people complaining since 2016 and someone mentioning there was a limitation to 720p back then…)

I have the same problem with my 4k Smasung TV. Photo quality is very low. I’ve email plex directly and no one would like to help me out. Searching this forum shows that this is a common problem… So plex-team please solve this issue!

Hey, Same here. Wrote while ago on this forum but no answer. Looks like they are focused on video performance. But photos in 4k loks stunning. Plex team should look into this issue. In everyday use i do not need VR and other fancy stuff i just use my TV. …

Same here - using Open PHT or PC based Plex Media Player, photos are sharp/as expected. Upgraded to Samsung TV and used the Smart TV App and Photos are VERY poor quality.

Noticed also the Xbox One App ALSO has lower quality pictures. It seems that the developes have made a decision to process the embedded ‘app’ photos differently now?

This really needs sorting

Mid 2018 and still wondering if there is any update on this. All my photos look quite terrible when viewed from Plex :frowning:

Damm , may of 2019 . I was going to see my photos on TV today and i came across a very terrible quality , i think lower than 720p. I tested on Samsung 4K TV (Plex App) then the PS4 App and then also on iOS , and all 3 clients show a terrible quality and no control or information of the resolution. Plex team needs to FIX THIS ! :rage:

Be surprised if they ever look into this. They don’t really care about local media anymore and just want to plug tidal etc…

Indeed, viewing photos using Plex is still very poor, after YEARS AND YEARS of posts with comments it is still a laugh.

Plex wants to become an do-it-all video/photo/music app… well, then do something about the photo quality, or just abandon it, which might be even better instead of having some crappy functionality as an appendix dangling on a great project.

I mean, just try to access a Photo library on a Pleax server filled with hires photos taken with say a recent iPhone with a 12Mpixel+ camera, using the Plex iOS app. At first glance the menu structure and navigation looks OK but if you zoom a little into the picture or compare it with the original photo it looks absolutely poor.
Colors flat, noisy, detail and sharpness lost, in other words way too compressed.
A 2MB picture looks like 100KB (try to email a photo to yourself using this amout of compression).

This is unacceptable for me and I would think for a large part of the Plex users too, but you might want to spent a poll on it among the Plex users to ask what they think and who is actually using the Photo functionality in Plex.

Another Photo related thing that needs even more attention is the part where you can access Photos and Videos from the iPhone itself, so then you click on the downpointing arrow on the top bar to select it.
Navigating here is just terrible, you can only view a list with small previews on the left with a large column with text and black space in the rest of the page.

I fully understand that (mobile) network bandwidth and mobile network data plans play a major roll in this, I use FileBrowser regularly to access photos remotely and this is not ideal too.
But when on a fast WiFi network this should be less of a problem.
Also I have 128GB of memory on my iPhone of which I would love to offer a chunk to proper photo previews, with the ability to loads the full hires photo if I want to.
