Plex servers about to be targeted

Anyone get the feeling that plex is about to be hit with a lawsuit asking for information on plex members as well as the media servers members have connected to their accounts?

“Thanks to a rapidly growing media application called Plex, torrent-based piracy is back in vogue, and better than ever (for criminals who have no problem with profiting from content that doesn’t belong to them, that is),…”

They really don’t understand how this all works, do they? So far running a Plex server for friends and family has been a considerable expense (hardware, bandwidth, software tools for curating files), not a profit.

Heh…

… and thanks to that helpful/hateful blog post by the lovers of Big Media/Brother/Cable/Government - we know right where to go to get, not only almost free Movies and TV, but (eventually) the server to run it all on.

Load Weapon - Shoot Foot

I think the problem is that reddit forum plexshare

I was browsing it last night and there are hundreds of servers adversiting 5000+ movies and tv shows for $5/month.

Like what the hell guys…why would you post something like that on the open internet?

Just like Movies and TV - how would anybody find it if it weren’t where everybody can see it?

Advertising Works!
(and those bonehead bloggers have probably done more for advertising those yay-hoos than any other single thing - EVER! - I’m sure there’s a big party going on somewhere)

Screw CreativeFuture and all of their affiliates. Another example of a lobbyist group that uses psychological manipulation to skew the facts and put pressure on companies that obviously do not endorse piracy or using their tools for piracy. They’re modern day adult bullies.

Can you imagine being an employee at one of these organizations? The amount of brainwashing they have to be subjected to makes me almost pity them. To be used by executives at the top for your brainpower and to know they are paid millions while you try to intimidate others so you can get into that group is pretty hollow. You get to tell your kids you shutdown bad guys, like Plex. Sounds like an amazingly ■■■■■■ job.

As I look through what’s on my server and think about where it came from:
The vast majority of visual media wasn’t paid for by anyone.
The vast majority of music - I bought.

Let’s see…
Big Music read the writing on the wall regarding piracy and changed their game plan. They adapted by, first realizing they couldn’t do anything about it, other than offering music at reasonable rates so that I, who really want to support those I listen to, will actually buy something rather than just ‘get it’. That worked out well for them. Not as well as it would have if the FBI actually kicked down doors and hauled people off to prison, but well enough to survive (quite well).

Big Visual Media is still convinced Casablanca (1942) should cost $100.
I’ll go out of my way to just ‘get it’.
Screw 'em.

There you go - Consumerism 101.
Some learn - Some don’t.

It’s so stupid because with just about anything not digital no one goes after you of whatever you personally own in your own home. Do furniture manufacturers come knocking on your door just because they found out that instead of using the three piece set you bought inside, you happen to use it in your garage… or instead sold it at a lower rate to your neighbor or even gave it away for free leaving it for someone else to take. Digital media is sold in bulk in the form of physical disks on eBay for less than the retail price. Shouldn’t the media companies go after Joe seller on eBay for selling 10 legit copies of a major brand for $10 ? When does this end? There are countless eBay resellers who made money off of physical media all while changing the number of peoples hands and perhaps never making the media companies anymore money with a legit sale on the dozens of potential people who could have bought it at a higher price originally. They shoot shot themselves numerous times in the foot because now cable companies own media companies and never took real initiatives to battle Netflix earlier on. They HAD many opportunities before the era of streaming to make earnings. Now they’re just trying to play the victim again.

I’ve sensed PLEX backing away from supporting our media libraries for some time now. It became obvious to me when they began featuring ad-supported, streaming content and pushing it to the front of their platform. That’s where their focus has been for some time. It’s no longer on support for personal media libraries. There’s so many (simple) things that we’ve requested they update/fix that they chose not to. The writing is on the wall.

And lets be fair, the majority of the plex servers out there would have alot of gray market material on them so its not completely unwarranted, but in my opinion, having a TV shows on there vs selling access to everything you’ve downloaded is a different ballgame altogether.

I have netflix, disney+, amazon prime and I still download shows available on there because its nice having them in a single spot.
I may have accidentally grabbed a few from services I don’t have too, but its an accident…its all so confusing sometimes.

Personally I think if you are out there selling access to everything you have on your personal library you deserve to get your ass handed to you.

I’m confused right now.
A Netflix disc flew, by itself, into my drive, MakeMKV opened and now this thing seems to be possessed by Satin!

Oh, Lordy, Lordy, Lordy… Hep Me!

lol…nice

Do you think I may have gotten a Virus when I visited that Creative A-hole site?

Oooooo, Lordy…
(where’s McAfee when I need it?)

where’s McAfee
he’s sitting on some remote beach with his Tinfoil hat on, 3 sheets to the wind I think…

There’s a great McAfee video out there, but I wouldn’t dream of stealing somebody’s thunder by posting it…

I’ve said before that as time marches on and Plex Inc. signs deals with more and more content owners, there will be a tipping point where these companies demand Plex do more to force people into watching content with ads vs. Plex clients being able to stream that same media from somebodies personal server with no ads. Like restricting streaming to the LAN or something.

I’ve seen other people mention this too but I really think the server piece is getting less and less attention when it comes to fixing bugs. I think the end goal is to just let it wither on the vine. I’m still using PMS v1.16.3.1402 because pretty much every version of the server that has came out since this one is riddled with severe problems.

I couldn’t imagine if something happened to my media and Plex’s ability to stream it. I don’t share it. We only use it here locally. I think I would be devastated. I’ve tried Emby and did NOT like it.
