Plex showing 10 GBS Bitrate

Can anyone explain why a movie would show up with a bitrate of 10gbs? Normally I see a reasonable number in this display but once in a while I get 10gbs. My server is only 1gb so I know there is some other meaning here.

Thanks

Is this a freshly added movie? It is missing the results of the thorough bandwidth analysis. Did you disable it under ‘Scheduled Tasks’?

And it is a HEVC encode, played in a web browser which doesn’t have HEVC support. So the required bandwidth is most likely a very raw estimation, since the real bandwidth can theoretically only be calculated after the transcoding has been finished. (i.e. after playback)

Try enabling ‘Perform extensive media analysis during maintenance’ in Scheduled Tasks.

Tip: if you’re regularly playing HEVC video, avoid the web app and use ‘Plex for Windows’ or ‘Plex Media Player’ instead.

side note: you appear to have an aggressive web browser add-on which injects javascript into every page (see lines 3–5 in your media XML). Disable it in plex web, it might interfere with regular operation.

I think that explains things… This is a newly added movie and it didn’t get a chance to do its thing. I will look at it again later. Never occurred to me that would be an estimate but it makes sense.

You say avoid the webclient. Is that just because it has to transcode down and that’s an intensive process?

As for the aggressive plugin I would guess that is One Login (SSO/Password Manager). I will look at it but nothing is ever a problem.

Thanks so much for the super fast reply and Merry Christmas to you.

You say “just”. In my humble opinion, it is not appropriate here.
Transcoding puts a heavy load on the server.
Every transcode process is diminishing the fidelity. Of both video and audio streams, if applied.
There are clients available for Windows, which allow you to avoid transcoding in the majority (or even all) of cases.
So my recommendation is to always use those, if possible, and only use the web app for “managing” tasks. The A/V engine of a web browser is just so limited…
