I am running Plex server and UMS on the same network, actually the same machine, my 2012 Mac Pro. Whenever Plex starts, UMS shows an unrecognized type of UPnP client (which it defaults to XBMC for some reason). I’ve confirmed by stopping Plex and starting it that it is indeed causing the client to appear. As far as I know, Plex server doesn’t act like a DLNA client, only a server. Is there some way to use Plex server to connect to other DLNA servers on the same network? If not, what is this UPnP client doing?
UPnP does not only refer to media players.
Plex server is using the UPnP mechanism to talk to the ‘network gateway’ (i.e. your router) and asks it to create a port forwarding, so your server can be accesses from outside your home network. (zero configuration networking)
Plex server is also searching on the local network for other plex clients. The mechanism used is very similar to how DLNA/UPnP AV discovers players and servers, so that may trigger the message from your software.
And no, Plex doesn’t provide a DLNA client to use other DLNA server’s media.
