Plex still not showing local metadata for music - Pulls bogus album name

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2058
Player Version#:

This seems to be a common topic, but the posts that appear old and/or unresolved.
Example: Plex Media server Version 1.3.4.3285 not reading local metadata in files

I went through this guide which did not yield the expected results:

In the music settings:
Prefer local metadata is checked
Album Art: Local Files Only

In the agents settings:
Local Media Assets is checked and the top entry.

I have used MediaMonkey to have the metadata ‘completed’ and add embedded cover art. This usually also includes the name of the song, the album, track number, the artists, and the album artists when applicable/available.

I did a rescan of the metadata last night.

I am viewing my music by folder (not Artists, Albums, or tracks) and in grid view. I see the songs individually with pictures, but some pictures do not match the embedded album artwork. The common issues is that these songs do not have an Album in the metadata. These are one-off songs that are not in an album.

Plex assigns an album when one is not in the metadata. I don’t like that, since there really is no album. It seems to pick one randomly from within the folder and then applies that album name to songs that are lacking. The artist name is then also ignored from the metadata and plex chooses ‘Various Artists’. Grrrr.

If I try to change the artist name by editing, Plex sometimes ignores it and changes it for me to ‘Various Artists’. If I try to erase the bogus album name, plex won’t let me - it just puts it back in place.

Maybe it is related to this:

I feel like I am either missing something obvious, or there are some internal rules that are ‘hidden’. E.g. every song MUST have an album and therefore I need to coerce my data to support plex. That is annoying when the simple result should be for plex to just honor my priority settings for the metadata and not create its own.

What am I missing or what data trap am I falling into?
