PLEX support for Synology DS418

Will there be support for Synology DS418 at some point ? It has 4K HW transcoding, so it would, in my opinion make perfectly good sense to have PLEX on the DS418 NAS…

I have the DS418play and Plex runs awesome on it. If you are looking to buy that model, I do recommend.

Hi Syffer. Did you get this to work? I can install the referenced alpha version below, but when i try to access the server from most devices, I am told that it needs to be upgraded…

Sorry… I should have been more clear. The device displays “To continue using this Media Server, please ask the owner to update to the latest version”. However, I am unable to update the media server any further.

Are you running Plex as an App directly on the DS418play? I purchased the DS418 thinking it would be the better option, but may want to exchange for the “play” model.

Yes. I download the Intel 64-bit DSM version off of the server downloads. I went with the play because it is one of the models that can handle 4K transcoding and uses the hardware acceleration. Plex never hangs for me. I’ve had multiple streams and barely hit 30% cpu. I haven’t had any problems with it at all.

If I may?

On Synology, we have Packages. Apps are the clients (your phone, tablet, or television).

Intel x86_64 systems with QSV support have full hardware trancoding capability.

RealTek based systems do not have access to the Synology proprietary capability. (We have asked)

Support for RealTek (ARMv8) systems is in forum beta test. It will soon be available as Plex Pass download. RealTek asserts it has hardware transcoding ability. All attempts to work with RealTek to promote this capability have been ignored by them.
