Plex Sync for Laptops

There’s a feature request for sync on the desktop client. You can find it here. I’d suggest everyone that needs this feature to go there and vote for it. Plex have talked recently about fixing sync and improving it across the product. Let’s hope they seize this opportunity to implement it properly for a windows client.

Same issues here. Desperately needed feature to be able to sync to laptops (Mac user here).

+1 for sync to Mac laptop. Would not have bought 1-year plex pass otherwise. Will not renew once this year is up. What a shame to need to start looking into Plex alternatives. Any suggestions?

+1 for being able to sync to my laptop using the app

Would also think this feature would be a no brainer.
However Netflix has the same limitation. A Tablet is a mobile device which you can sync too a laptop is not a considered mobile device and you cannot.

So the sync does work but the problem is without internet there is no option to go offline. I did find however all the items that Synced are in fact on the laptop in Plex Synced Content location. I’m just not able to use Plex to watch them (weird design) so I just Use VLC. Problem is when it does the syncing it does not give the file the correct naming convention so if you have a lot synced you need to some hunting to find what your looking for as plex just uses numbers have not figured out what the numbers represent? It’s a pain but it works with no Internet on the plane so I’m good until they can fix it.

This is stupid

Please bring this feature back. I haven’t used it in a while and tonight started prepping for a vacation. Can’t seem to figure out something I did years ago only to find out it’s no longer possible.

Plex, I will replace you.

I am afraid you fell for the same trap I did some time ago. You are able to initialize sync from PMP to any paired device, but PMP itself does not support sync. On the other hand, abandoned (and awfully broken) Plex window store app does. So if you have or had windows store Plex app installed, you are able to initialize sync to your device, but it synced with different application, not PMP, that’s why you can’t play synced contents in PMP…

Before I paid good money I researched the under explained and over complicated world of Plex and it’s sometimes counter intuitive quirky apps with reservations.

  1. Not fully trusting the pricey model for an incomplete software that has lots of bling and dubious bang for the bucks
  2. The often absent developers from forum complaints and the difficulty in resolving how to do even the simplest things
3, How little the product direction addresses the most obvious issues…but I thought (giving benefit of the doubt) that was down to the time required to deliver the complexities of the fundamentals - until one day I thought they were there…I took the plunge…

So it seems they are not there and are degrading the experience. Multi-user for the home is overly complex and restrictive, downloading is overly complex or doesn’t work and is it there or not? When it’s finished converting is it syncing , oh maybe not maybe – aha wait yes it syncs…wait long time but oh hang on…it was working but now it’s not! Must be me -but no - They screwed the easy bit and made the app useless by dumping us without a word - jeeze…why bother…how many hours wasted to find they didn’t bother to make it work? we cget shiny new trailers but no sync - can’t sync to commute or get the plane or watch on holiday or for the kids while on the move - that glossy release promise email that tell us how wonderful it all is.

Come on guys. This is a retail product - grow up and support your customers - Mobility is a key product feature that all users will expect as default - and we can’t get it on Windows - really?!

Plex could be great - but instead I fear it is doomed to fall into the trap of arrogantly fading away for the cardinal sin of offending and ignoring the most important aspect of its business model - the modern day fickle yet simple demands of the mobile customer - just make the simple things work!

  1. populate server - ok this is good and works - but many media servers work!
  2. sync content with ANY device - this is one of your key unique selling points - and you killed it? Really?
  3. actually show and play the synced content - you know how - you have already done it!..or did the guy that did that bit leave?..so hire another and spend some of your income to feed the cash cow that you are missing!

There easy - happy customers…but why do I think this will also be ignored?

PS - in case it’s not obvious I’m on a weekend away and discovered my download does not work hence viewing plans knackered. Not happy!

This definitely needs resolving. No point having a Windows app with half assed features.

I thought laptops were mobile devices. This is a strange distinction that should not have to be made. I ‘hearted’ the original post hoping it might help but to be honest this request for this feature goes back to 2011 from my memory, perhaps earlier. Too bad.

Ah yes…and now I notice why they ignore our comments. they leave them for three months … and then it closes the thread automatically ! Jeeze. That says it all.

And look at this:
Welcome to Plex Forum — thanks for contributing!

  • Does your reply improve the conversation in some way?
  • Be kind to your fellow community members.
  • Constructive criticism is welcome, but criticize ideas , not people.

YES - I am contributing to a discussion that is ignored (apparently since 2011). My point is; listen to the constructive requests (from your paying customers) and don’t ignore them - which a policy of closing posts after only three months does not support! This approach in no way fullfills your promise of features and service. Somewhere there is eight years of people requesting this feature to work and yet its all hidden in closed threads.
Shame - you do have a great product - but with your approach (as with many) it is unlikely to gain the dizzy heights it should - you are too slow to grasp your greatest market opportunities; and someone will spot the gap and grab it from under you when you least expect it…mark my words - it will happen.

+1 Please give us something for this!

Pretty much everyone on here is a Plex Pass subscriber! Plex, if you can hear us, we love what you’re doing and we gave you money! Please give us this thing that seems to be so standard to other platforms that we’ve wanted for so long.

+1!!! Please add sync for laptops!

Going out bush for a few days on business. Wanted to load/sync some of my Plex library to my MacBook. Find out I can’t do it, WTF???

Um, ARE MOBLE NOT LAPTOPS THEY ARE???

And please, don’t suggest some s^@!*y workaround (airplay to Mac from phone using third party software).

Almost everyone assumed Plex would sync to a mobile device. How shocked they all must be when they try to do that to a laptop.

Stuck in a roach motel in the middle of the bush with no wifi, 4g or anything resembling digital communications watching the latest Avengers movie on my tiny phone screen. #firstworldproblems - PLEX FIX IT!

Oh yes, I’ve come across this issue too.
Forget about syncinc content on PCs/laptops. Media server my ass.
Was actually considering a lifetime pass as there are some offers going, but might make the change to emby.
Unreal that at this day and age content syncing is still not resolved…

Another +1 to keep this thread alive.

Work wi-fi isn’t the greatest, would really appreciate syncing on my laptop rather than using my phone all the time. It seems to work ok, but the experience could be greatly improved.

Once again heading out with laptop. Yes sync to MacBook Pro is something I would still like. Yes laptops are portable devices. Yes my laptop screen is bigger and better than my phone. Yes laptops are still relevant devices for personal use and for real work. Yes please work on this to finish this loose end.
