Plex + Synology + HDD advice

Hello, I have 2 issues… My Lacie NAS is outdated and (maybe) is going to die sometime soon. The 2nd is that I’m tired of having to use my laptop to run PMS and see my content with Plex
…So I need some advice to use Plex with a NAS without using a computer…
I was thinking buying a Synolgy DS220+ and a WD Red Pro 4TB NAS Hard Drive… Is this Ok? will I achieve what I desire to do?
I run Plex in a roku ultra, but could run it directly with the Plex app on the smart TV.
Thanks in advance for you comments/suggestions

probably

That depends what you desire it to do.
That model will certainly be able to run your Plex Media Server.
Plex can utilize the iGPU of that NAS to handle some transcoding. The built-in CPU on its own will work with some lower-bitrate 1080p content but it’ll likely not be powerful enough to transcode higher-bitrate 1080p or even 4K material. It’s important to keep that in mind as not all transcoding jobs can be covered by the iGPU (e.g. burning subtitles into your video depends on the CPU only).

Hello Tom,
thanks for the info.
Most of my content is 720p and in some cases 1080p. Bitrate (as I have been able to see in some cases) is around 4000 for 720p and about 8000 for 1080p… some are a bit higher (8500) and very few around 10,000… we’ll see how those perform.
I don’t use plex for 2160p or 4k… I have a HDD for those and plug it directly to the tv either using the tv video player or VLC.
I went ahead and bought the DS220+ and a 6TB 7200rpm WD Red pro… strange that the price difference between the 4TB and the 6TB was only $50.
Lets hope installation is not difficult; it’s been ages since I did this with my Lacie.
Thanks again!
